With three losses so far this season, LSU football has once again taken a bit of a stumble in their standing nationally, most recently landing at No. 22 overall in this week’s 2024 College Football Playoff rankings.

LSU football faces significant road ahead following latest 2024 College Football Playoff ranking

It’s been a tough week for LSU football, and it doesn’t appear that things will be getting any easier any time soon.

Heading into week 11, many were viewing the Tigers vs. the Crimson Tide as something of an elimination game for the 2024 College Football Playoff, and on the surface, it was. Dropping the matchup against Alabama by a whopping score of 42-13, it essentially secured the fact that the purple and gold will more than likely miss out on a chance to compete in the playoff for a fifth season in a row.

Only further emphasizing this fact was today’s release of the CFP rankings, where LSU has officially found themselves as the No. 22 team in the entire FBS.

Thanks to this latest version of the 2024 College Football Playoff rankings, the Tigers no longer control their own destiny as far as a spot in the 12-team bracket goes. Instead, they’ll need a little bit of help in the form of other SEC programs losing, and in turn, giving up their spot in the SEC Championship. From there, it’s up to coach Brian Kelly and his squad to not only win the rest of their regular season matchups, but also the championship game (if they can make it in).

Important to note, this is going to be much easier said than done, as the SEC still appears to be dominating the rankings as a whole, with nine total teams making an appearance in this week’s top-25 (No. 3 Texas, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 10 Alabama, No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 12 Georgia, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 21 South Carolina, No. 22 LSU, No. 23 Missouri). Furthermore, with four out of the top-five teams in the country coming from the Big Ten, this might be the most wide open SEC Championship race that we’ve seen in years.

The purple and gold will continue to fight for their chances at a spot later this week on Saturday, November 16, 2024, against Billy Napier and the unranked Florida Gators (4-5). The matchup is set to take place at 2:30 p.m. CT in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Gainesville, FL, and will be available to watch live on ABC or ESPN+.
