When looking at the 2023 college football season, it’s not difficult to realize that the LSU football defensive line could be one of the very best in the country. They return superstars Maason Smith and Mekhi Wingo and brought in multiple instant impact transfers. The issue arises when you realize some of those pieces could be heading to the NFL following this season. That’s why the commitment of defensive lineman De’Myrion Johnson on Thursday could prove to be so important.
LSU football receives its first defensive line commitment of the class of 2024
Defensive line was a position LSU football needed to hit in the 2024 class. Lucky for them, they just received their first defensive tackle commitment, and he’s a good one.
LSU football defensive line prospect De’Myrion Johnson comes in as a three-star and the No. 447 player nationally. He’s also ranked the No. 44 defensive lineman and No. 11 player out of Louisiana per 247Sports.
Johnson is the kind of high schooler who is simply bigger and stronger than his opposition. This has allowed him plenty of production at the high school level, and he already has a significant leg-up heading into college. The unfortunate part of having that kind of strength so early on is that you can rely heavily on it and get away with it versus lesser competition.
When he gets on campus, developing agility and finesse moves will be essential. Right now, he could provide fantastic run support, but if he wants to get after the quarterback at the college level, finesse moves will be a must-have.
With De’Myrion Johnson a part of the class, LSU has nine players committed from Louisiana. This was a big emphasis for coach Brian Kelly, and it clearly has paid off so far. In fact, one of the few Louisiana-based prospects left uncommitted is another defensive lineman, Dominick McKinley. Considering the need at defensive line, don’t be surprised to see Kelly and the rest of the coaching staff go hard after McKinley to help round out this class of 2024.
