A look at the LSU tight end room following most recent transfer portal loss

The spring transfer portal has been busier than usual these past few days and the Tigers haven’t exactly escaped unscathed. Most recently, the LSU tight end room took a hit, as veteran Connor Gilbreath will look for a new home in 2024.

Similarly to what coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers have faced with their wide receiver group, the LSU tight end room almost had too much depth heading into the 2024 college football season.

With as many as six potential impact players in the group heading into the offseason, someone was bound to be left out. Relatively unsurprisingly, transfers would soon follow, as rising sophomore Jackson McGohan, and most recently, rising junior Connor Gilbreath will be looking for a new place to call home in 2024.

Gilbreath first joined the Tigers in 2023 as a JUCO transfer and while he didn’t leave much of an impact from a pass catching perspective, he was more than ready to leave his mark as a blocker.

Standing at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, he doesn’t exactly have offensive lineman size, but he certainly blocks like one and coach Brian Kelly trusts him as if he were one. In 13 games, the Redding, CA, product logged 56 snaps during his purple and gold career.

Depth is the name of the game for the LSU tight end room in 2024

Typically losing two talented tight ends to the transfer portal in one offseason would hurt a roster in a major way. However, with the way coach Brian Kelly has built the LSU tight end room, the purple and gold should be good to go in 2024.

Headlined by rising junior Mason Taylor, the group has at least four players who could very easily leave their mark on the team, particularly as a pass catching threat.

Taylor, Ka’Morreun Pimpton and Mac Markway are all returning to the team and have each shown promise as potential future stars for the purple and gold, having totaled 40 receptions for 365 yards and two touchdowns.

However, the real potential rests in the new additions. Standing at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds, Louisiana-based Trey’Dez Green could very easily become one of the most dangerous pass catchers on the entire 2024 LSU football roster.

Rated as a five-star recruit and the No. 31 player nationally, Green has all of the tools to see the field early on and could become quite a force by the time SEC play rolls around.

Regardless of who ends up standing out as a leader, the LSU tight end room has all the pieces it needs to become a serious threat heading into the 2024 college football season. For now, it’s just a matter of staying the course and continuing to dominate this offseason.
