What a game! More specifically, though, what a game for quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Malik Nabers. The 2023 LSU football passing game duo didn’t even play the entire game, but today, they were practically unstoppable vs. Mississippi State.

It was an excellent day for coach Brian Kelly’s squad. Right away, the Tigers were on fire, both on offense and defense. However, no one was quite as good as the LSU football passing game duo of quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Malik Nabers.

For starters, the senior quarterback was about as efficient as anyone could hope. Out of 34 passes, he completed 30 – good enough for an 88.2 percent completion percentage. Furthermore, he threw for nearly a career-high in passing yards, with 361 through the air. He’s only done better twice in his career, throwing for 363 and 408 in 2019 while still at Arizona State.

As good as his numbers were, one of the guys he was throwing to might have been even better.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers caught 13 passes for an incredible 239 receiving yards and two touchdowns. That’s good enough for 18.4 yards per reception.

Passing game prowess bodes well for SEC Championship hopes

LSU football is officially 1-0 in conference play, and the race to the SEC Championship has officially begun.

One of the big question marks for this Tiger offense heading into 2023 was the passing game and whether it could compete in the SEC. Well, based on this one game vs. Mississippi State, so far, so good.

Still, how exactly will the Tigers’ passing game fair against the top of the conference? As things stand, the big teams in the way are Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Notably, Alabama is the only one on their schedule, so that is the main bump in the road to keep an eye on.

However, after week two, the Crimson Tide pass defense was particularly unimpressive. Through two games in 2023, Alabama football has allowed 241 yards per game, good enough for No. 89 in all of college football.

Following a dominant win over Mississippi State, LSU football looks good in a year when the SEC is slightly down. Now, it’s on to the next one as the Tigers face Arkansas in Baton Rouge next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CST.
