The 2023 LSU football season is just days away, and news continues to flow out of Baton Rouge. Today, we officially learned who this season’s captains are, and it’s a group filled with excellent leadership abilities. On defense, the team will be represented by veterans safety Greg Brooks Jr and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. On offense, there’s representation from both the present, and future, as quarterback Jayden Daniels and offensive tackle Will Campbell received the honor.
The offensive 2023 LSU football captains have representation from both young and old(er)
When looking at the culture on a team, it often stems directly from the coach and captains. Even before the season has started, it’s apparent that LSU football has an elite culture heading into 2023. Every year, the team selects its captains and this year’s group is filled with impressive talent and leadership.
The selections are largely unsurprising for the offensive side of the ball, but it’s notable to mention that a sophomore received the honor this year.
It’s been a good week for sophomore offensive tackle Will Campbell. On Saturday, it was revealed that the stud sophomore would don the legendary No. 7 jersey for the Tigers in 2023. This was historic for many reasons, but most importantly, he is officially the first offensive lineman to receive the nod, as defensive backs and wide receivers have primarily worn it in the past.
Today, he can officially add captain to his list of accomplishments. Last season, Campbell started 13 games for the Tigers at left tackle. As a freshman in the SEC, that’s a hard thing to do, but he didn’t just survive – he excelled.
Alongside Will Campbell, senior quarterback Jayden Daniels will also serve as captain for the offense. Despite entering just his second season with the team, he’s provided excellent leadership since day one. Additionally, his teammates have done nothing but speak highly of him this offseason, so things are certainly on the rise for the former Arizona State quarterback.
The offense has excellent representation with its captains. Notably, they elected both a senior and a sophomore for the position. Not only is it ideal for this year’s team, but the leadership for future teams should also receive an excellent boost.
Veteran leadership was an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball
It’s always hard to find success when a team adds plenty of new faces, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. While the Tigers welcome several big-time additions to this year’s team, veteran presence could counter this in 2023.
Furthermore, this was prevalent within the captain selections, as both players have experienced plenty of college football and could be in store for big seasons this year. The two selections on the defensive side of the ball were junior defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo and senior safety Greg Brooks Jr.
Similarly to offensive tackle Will Campbell, defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo has experienced an exciting week so far. On Saturday, he received good news, as he was selected to don the No. 18 jersey, another legendary number within the LSU football program.
Now, he’s a captain for the 2023 team, and while he might not be the most outspoken player on the roster, he’s made his mark in Baton Rouge despite beginning his career at Missouri.
One of the biggest question marks on the LSU football defense is defensive back. The Tigers could have several new starters, including multiple who joined the program in the offseason.
However, senior Greg Brooks Jr should provide stability as he’s entering his second season with the Tigers. Brooks Jr enters his fifth season of college football, so he knows this sport and what it takes to excel at this level. If the Tiger defense takes a step forward in 2023, the senior safety will, without a doubt, be a big part of it.
With the 2023 LSU football captains announced, the Tigers turn their heads to the season opener versus Florida State. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. CST in Orlando, FL, and should be one of the best matchups of week one.
