It wasn’t too long ago that coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers were favored to land highly sought-after four-star defensive back Dezz Ricks in the class of 2023. While it didn’t work out for the purple and gold at the time, they’re hoping to make a change things this offseason, as LSU is reportedly working to get the SEC transfer portal cornerback on campus sometime this week.

As weird as it may sound, we’re currently in an era of college football where even if you lose out on a big-time recruit out of high school, it doesn’t exactly mean you’ve missed out on them entirely. You may just need to wait a year or two, as the transfer portal has opened the door for so many players to end up looking for a second or even third home down the line.

For LSU, this is exactly what they hope to be getting in former four-star defensive back Dezz Ricks. Out of high school, it was a battle between Alabama, Florida and the Tigers up to the very end, and for a while, it even seemed as though the Bradenton, FL, product would end up in the purple and gold.

He ultimately chose Alabama, and spent his entire freshman year with the Crimson Tide. However, with the recent retirement of legendary head coach Nick Saban, things have changed for the big-time talent.

As of Monday evening, Ricks has officially entered the transfer portal, and per Zach Blostein of 247Sports, he’s reportedly looking to take a visit to Baton Rouge later this week.

Standing at 6-foot-1, 182 pounds, the SEC transfer portal cornerback has some serious ability and the size to match. Despite failing to record any stats through the 2023 season, this shouldn’t deter fans from viewing him as a fantastic prospect.

Originally a part of the class of 2024, Ricks ultimately reclassified into the 2023 cycle, so he technically would have been a senior in high school last season if we went purely off of his age.

He’s fast, he’s explosive, and he has just about all of the necessary traits to turn into a star at the college level. It just so happened that he found himself in the midst of one of the best defensive backfields in the country.

It’s important to note that he’s also looking to take a visit to Texas A&M along with LSU this week. Still, if coach Brian Kelly and the Tiger coaching staff can manage to get him on campus, it would go a long way in bringing the talented defensive back to Baton Rouge next season.
