Earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly expressed a need for the running backs to step up. Jayden Daniels can’t be your leading rusher if you want to compete at the highest level in the SEC. Well, tonight versus Grambling State, LSU football may have found their answer in new addition running backs Logan Diggs and Kaleb Jackson.

LSU football shows out with a dominating win versus Grambling State

It’s always interesting when a top-25 team plays an FCS program. On one hand, it provides an opportunity to work on weaknesses in preparation for the rest of the season.

Conversely, you’re expected to win in a dominating fashion, and if you don’t, it’s generally held against you. Lucky for Tiger fans, domination is precisely what LSU football did this evening, as they beat Grambling State 72-10.

Early on, things were shaping up to be quite the shootout. The teams went back and forth in the first five drives, scoring practically at will. However, with a missed field goal on the sixth overall drive of the game, Grambling State wouldn’t score another point.

There were several notable performances for Brian Kelly’s squad. For instance, Jayden Daniels became the second player in LSU football history to throw at least five touchdowns in one half.

However, few were more impressive than the Tiger running backs. Coming off a performance in which the group combined for just 49 rushing yards, something needed to change.

Now, looking back on the performance, something did indeed change, as new addition running backs Logan Diggs and Kaleb Jackson shined all evening.

New addition running backs star in victory

LSU football has eight scholarship running backs on roster. While that could be an excellent problem to have, it was beginning to look pretty grim following last week’s loss. The Tigers lost to Florida State 45-24 and received little to no production from their running backs.

They needed to find a lead running back, and no one was stepping up to the plate.

Is it possible that the lead back didn’t get their chance at that moment? Well, based on today’s results, it looks like that could have been the case, as two new addition running backs shined in a big way.

No one really knew what to expect from freshman Kaleb Jackson and junior Logan Diggs this fall. However, after the Tigers’ victory over Grambling State, they might be in line for several more snaps going forward.

Logan Diggs recorded 133 total yards and one touchdown, including 7.7 yards per carry. On the other hand, Kaleb Jackson picked up 134 total yards from scrimmage to go with his two touchdowns.

Both backs were elite all evening, giving Tiger fans plenty to be excited about. It’s important to remember that this was all against Grambling State. Still, the performances were encouraging, to say the least.

LSU football begins SEC play a week from now as they face Mississippi State in Starkville, MS, at 12:00 p.m., September 16. With these new addition running backs performing as they did tonight, it could provide the spark needed to come away with a Tiger victory.
