Following Tuesday’s fall camp practice, it was revealed that LSU sophomore tight end Mac Markway has made the decision to step away from the Tiger football program and enter the transfer portal.
LSU sophomore tight end announces decision to enter transfer portal
The Tiger football team is in the midst of its first full week of fall camp, and with that, fans and media alike are slowly beginning to learn about what they can expect from this coming season’s roster.
Earlier today while speaking with the media post-practice, coach Brian Kelly took the time to discuss LSU sophomore tight end Mac Markway and his absence from practices up to this point.
“He’s made the decision that he’s not gonna play,” the Tiger head coach said when asked about the rising sophomore. “I don’t know what his plans are, whether he’s gonna transfer, but he informed us last night that he’s not going to play at LSU anymore.”
Not long following the announcement, Markway took to Twitter to make his own official statement on the matter and confirm that he will indeed be entering the transfer portal to look for a new home.
For the Tigers, this a fairly significant loss. Throughout the 2023 season, Markway spent significant time working as the backup tight end on the purple and gold offense, while veteran Mason Taylor understandably handled things as the primary starter.
Even despite not being on the field all that often, the former LSU sophomore tight end had no trouble leaving an impact in his rookie year with the program. Recording a total of three receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown in 12 game appearances (including one start), the former four-star recruit out of St. Louis, MO, looked primed to see a boost in production in year-two.
With that said, the 6-foot-4, 258-pound tight end is now headed to the portal and has the potential to see immediate starting snaps, depending on where he ultimately ends up.
The Tiger tight end room now figures to be something of a three-headed monster, with Mason Taylor leading the charge while sophomore Ka’Morreun Pimpton and freshman Trey’Dez Green will take the wide majority of backup snaps. Coach Brian Kelly has already expressed interest in some three-tight end looks, so expect to see plenty of the trio as the 2024 college football season rapidly approaches this fall.
