With less than a month remaining until No. 11 LSU softball takes the diamond for the first time in 2025, starting pitcher Sydney Berzon is once again expected to star for the Tigers, most recently being named to the D1Softball 2025 Preseason All-American First Team.
LSU softball starting pitcher Sydney Berzon named to D1Softball 2025 Preseason All-American First Team
Sometimes, it’s just better to not overthink things.
Every year before the college softball season, D1Softball releases a series of projections for the upcoming year, from the top 25 teams in the country, to who they think are most likely to go on to be stars over the next few months.
In turn, with less than a month remaining until the start of the 2025 campaign, those lists have slowly started to be released, and relatively unsurprisingly, LSU has been no stranger to them thus far.
Earlier this offseason, D1Softball released their preseason top 25, and the purple and gold were notably rated as the No. 11 team nationally, after finishing last season with an overall record of 44-17. Important to keep in mind, is the fact that you don’t find yourself with a top 15 ranking without also possessing claim to some of the most talented players in the country.
With that, it was almost assumed that as least one Tiger would find their way onto the D1Softball Preseason All-American Team, and as of early Wednesday afternoon, this ended up being exactly the case, as junior starting pitcher Sydney Berzon was named to the First Team.
Entering her third season with the purple and gold in 2025, Sydney Berzon very well might be the most obvious, and deserving selection for a preseason All-American selection in all of college softball. Having begun her career with two straight All-American Team selections (Third Team in 2023, Second Team in 2024), she has more than proven herself as one of the best pitchers in the entire sport. If anything, it’s just a matter of how much better she can get.
Throwing as many as 208 pitches in one game, Berzon was an absolute machine for head coach Beth Torina and the LSU softball team in 2024. Recording a 20-9 record as a sophomore, logging an ERA of 1.78 to go along with a whopping 185 strikeouts in 204.0 innings pitched, the numbers speak for themselves.
Now, as we look ahead to the 2025 campaign, the Tigers notably placed an emphasis on pitching depth, bringing in multiple immediate impact players, such as former McNeese starter Ashley Vallejo, as well as the 2024 Florida Gatorade Player of the Year, Jayden Heavener.
What this means, is that Berzon is hopefully going to have some flexibility to rest her arm, something that she couldn’t entirely afford towards the back half of the 2024 season, where she threw an eye-popping 549 pitches in six appearances to close out the postseason for the Tigers.
With LSU once again looking like contenders to make some noise in the NCAA Tournament, don’t be surprised to hear the name Sydney Berzon plenty, as she once again looks to continue her dominant career for the purple and gold.
