While quarterback play has largely dominated Baton Rouge, LA over the last five seasons, Tiger quarterback Garrett Nussmeier certainly hasn’t forgotten about the rest of the backfield unit. Earlier this week, the star signal caller put out some serious praise for the LSU running back room ahead of the upcoming 2024 season.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier knows the LSU running back room is capable of a solid 2024 season

If the 2023 campaign was any indication, the Tiger offense is bound to throw the ball quite a bit this coming season. Naturally the wide majority of national media discussion has in turn surrounded that specific aspect of the unit. Still, they’ll at least need to run the ball here and there; so what exactly can we expect from the ball carriers?

Well, if you ask quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, the LSU running back room is looking primed and ready to put in some serious work during the 2024 season.

“We’ve got a lot of really good backs. That room is deep with Kaleb (Jackson), Josh (Williams) and Caden (Durham), and just the whole room,” the purple and gold signal caller said while speaking with the media on Friday. “We’ve got some guys that care about the team, they care about football, they care about what they’re doing, they want to do things the right way. And that’s the most important thing. Those are all guys that I can trust, and I know they’re gonna be where they’re supposed to be and do what they’re supposed to do. So that’s huge, especially in the running back room.”

Up to this point in the offseason, the LSU offensive line along with Nussmeier and wide receiver Kyren Lacy have snagged the bulk of offensive headlines, but it’s important to remember that the Tigers are returning plenty of talent at the running back position.

With veterans Josh Williams and John Emery Jr both set to return in 2024, there’s no shortage of experience to go along with the electric young talent that’s been put on display by rising sophomore Kaleb Jackson.

In 2023, the returning trio put together a solid outing overall, recording 109 rushes for 570 yards and 10 touchdowns, with Williams once again putting in the bulk of carries.

As if that weren’t enough, the purple and gold are also adding one of the top backs in the class of 2024 to their room, as former four-star Caden Durham figures to bring immediate impact kind of speed to the Tiger backfield.

Overall, the LSU running back room likely won’t snag too many headlines leading up to the season, but when their numbers are called, there’s little doubt that they’ll be ready to go, and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier clearly has all the confidence in the world in them.
