One of the top stories of the draft cycle so far has been LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and his decision to not compete in the on-field drills portion of the 2024 NFL combine. Notably, when the star signal caller was asked about it during today’s media availability, he took the time to explain how his teammates played a major role in the ultimate decision.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels gives interesting explanation for decision to not workout at 2024 NFL combine
From the moment LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels stepped foot in Baton Rouge, LA, he’s been a leader, and once again he’s shown his willingness to put his teammates above himself.
Ahead of the current 2024 NFL combine, news broke that the star signal caller had elected to not compete in the on-field drills, but would instead just focus on the interview process. For some, this is a sign of over-confidence, while for others, it’s just a matter of letting their in-season tape do the talking for them.
However, for Daniels, it seems as though his teammates played a major role in his ultimate decision.
“For me, I wanted to be able to – at pro day – help my guys that work so hard to get their opportunity in front of everybody to go out there and showcase what they can do,” the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner explained during Friday’s media availability. “So it wasn’t about me, it was about my teammates.”
Every year, there are generally two options for aspiring NFL draft selections to make an impression on scouts. The big one is the combine, in which just about every scout and coach in the country makes an appearance as they look to get a closer look at some of the top prospects.
However, in the case of Jayden Daniels, he’s elected to skip the combine and instead just focus on the upcoming LSU pro day. This makes sense for a number of reasons, but possibly the most significant is that he’ll have the opportunity to throw to his wide receivers such as Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr, who he’s developed quite the connection with over the last two years.
Not only will it benefit the signal caller, but as he mentioned in his comments to the media, it will force some additional scouts to make the trip out to Baton Rouge to not only see him, but also his teammates.
The LSU pro day is set to take place later this month, as the several former Tigers with NFL aspirations will have an opportunity to make yet another impression on March 27.
