LSU coach Brian Kelly has made a very conscious effort to lock down the state of Louisiana in the world of recruiting, and he once again has another opportunity coming up in the near future. Later this month, top running back recruiting target James Simon is expected to make his final commitment, and is notably considering the purple and gold among several other top contenders.
LSU football running back recruiting target to make final decision later this month
Is there such thing as too many ball carrier commitments in one cycle? Maybe, but it’s becoming abundantly clear that coach Brian Kelly doesn’t seem to think so.
Already, the Tiger class of 2025 has two running back pledges in the form of talented Louisiana products Harlem Berry and JT Lindsey, but LSU might not be done just yet. Later this month on May 29, yet another Louisiana-based running back recruiting target – James Simon – is expected to make his final commitment, and among his final contenders include LSU football among several other major programs.
Along with the purple and gold, Simon, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound running back out of Shreveport, LA, will reportedly be deciding between Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame, Texas and Texas A&M.
Ranking No. 8 at his position, and No. 115 nationally, according to On3, the early favorite to eventually land his commitment is Texas, but LSU and Texas A&M don’t seem to be completely out of it just yet. Still, that said, with the Tigers already having two commitments, it doesn’t exactly make it likely that he ends up in Baton Rouge, and he’s also set to take an official visit with the Longhorns later this summer in June.
Current and future state of the Tiger running back room
While coach Brian Kelly certainly wouldn’t complain about landing a third running back recruiting target in the class of 2025, he also likely won’t be hurting for depth if they don’t end up as the No. 1 choice.
Looking at the past two recruiting cycles alone, LSU football has three ball carriers either committed or signed – class of 2024 signee Caden Durham and class of 2025 commitments Harlem Berry and JT Lindsey – all of whom are rated as a four-star or better.
As if that weren’t enough, former class of 2023 four-star New Orleans, LA, product Kaleb Jackson has shown immense improvement and is looking like a future star for the purple and gold.
In short, the program is set to have four blue chip running backs who could end up making an immediate impact from the moment they step foot on the field during the 2025 college football season. If the Tigers are able to land yet another commitment from James Simon, it would only further bolster an already high-potential position room as a whole.
