One of the top stars on the Tiger offense is LSU football wide receiver Malik Nabers. The junior broke out in a big way in 2022 and is looking to build on that in 2023. Looking ahead to week three vs. Mississippi State, the star receiver could be in store for a big game.
LSU football wide receiver Malik Nabers could be in store for a big game vs. Mississippi State
Heading into the 2023 football season, LSU football wide receiver Malik Nabers was widely viewed as one of the best in college football.
It was for good reason, too. In 2022, he went off. In total, he caught 72 balls for 1,017 yards and three touchdowns. Now, we’re heading into week three, and those expectations haven’t dropped in the slightest.
Last week, Nabers picked up just five receptions, but it was for 87 yards and a touchdown. That’s an average of 17.4 yards per reception, and plenty of that yardage came after the catch.
Earlier this week, Nabers spoke with the media, breaking down what to expect from the Mississippi State defense in week three. If he’s correct in his scouting report, he could be in store for a big game if they play their cards right.
“More off-coverage that me and Jayden have saw outside with the corners. A lot of three-down, moving the JACK out, getting on page with him about how to run different routes on the JACK. So, it’s a lot of just drop coverage that they do a lot. There’s gonna be a lot of open holes that we can hit.”
This isn’t his first rodeo
One of the big reasons for his high expectations in 2023 was his increase in experience. In 2021, he started getting a feel for the collegiate game, earning his first start vs. Mississippi State.
He picked up 28 total catches for 417 yards and four touchdowns that season, but he didn’t exactly find immediate success. In that first start vs. the Bulldogs, he picked up just one catch for four yards.
However, he’s not that freshman anymore. He’s one of the more experienced wide receivers in college football and has the confidence to go along with it. Here’s what LSU football wide receiver Malik Nabers said about his freshman season in Starkville in comparison to this year:
“Going into my freshman year, after hearing about it, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. It was my first game that I actually started, so, flowers in my stomach. I was jittery about just being out on the field. But it was pretty loud, but now that I’m experienced about loud crowds, I figure I can just focus in on getting my job done.”
The Tigers will face the Mississippi State Bulldogs for their SEC opener this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CST in Starkville, MS.
