It almost made too much sense. From the moment Notre Dame running back, Logan Diggs hit the transfer portal, all eyes were on LSU. Now, on Tuesday, May 16, it was made official. The LSU football transfer portal class has its running back.

The LSU football transfer portal class receives big-time commitment from former Notre Dame running back

Running back Logan Diggs announced his intent to transfer from the Notre Dame football program on April 27. Having formerly played for Brian Kelly in South Bend, IN, it was an easy connection to make for a possible destination. Adding to things was the fact that Logan Diggs is from the state of Louisiana. The fact that LSU football was in search of running back depth almost made things too easy a decision.

Having Diggs join the LSU football transfer portal class is enormous for coach Brian Kelly and the rest of the program. While the Tigers do technically return four running backs from their previous season, that’s where the certainty ends. With the combination of injuries and academic challenges, things were looking bleak.

With Diggs joining the team for the 2023 season, things start to look much brighter. In 2022 with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he recorded 1,031 all-purpose yards along with six touchdowns. He’s a true do-it-all-back who can catch the ball out of the backfield, run through you or even jump over you to pick up extra yardage. The LSU football team got a good one.

The best of the rest

Diggs joins a massive transfer portal class which now has 13 members as a part of it. Diggs is the sole running back in the class and one of just three offensive players. That means they have 10 defensive transfers as a part of this class. Unless you’re Colorado, that isn’t something you see often, especially when you consider how elite some of those players are.

One of the most notable parts of the transfer portal class is that they have four cornerbacks committed. After losing just about their entire secondary in 2022, the LSU football team needed to rebuild in that department. So, Brian Kelly did just that, picking up four four-star transfers in the defensive backfield. For context, many of those guys could start just about anywhere in the country, and the majority have multiple years of eligibility remaining.

Aside from the defensive backfield, they also picked up some elite defensive linemen and edge rushers. The Tigers picked up five in total and found some much-needed depth in those positions. Finally, they picked up former Oregon State linebacker Omar Speights to round out the defensive transfer class. Speights projects to be an immediate impact player and could become an All-SEC kind of player by the end of the season.

Overall, this LSU football transfer portal class is elite. Plain and simple, they found some immediate impact players who will make this team better. Brian Kelly made it clear that this would not be a rebuild, and he is staying true to it. This team wants to win now.
