Itās incredible how much can change in such a short period of time. Just a few months ago, LSU football was looking to completely rebuild their defensive secondary. Well, they did that, and now they have one of the best cornerback rooms in the SEC, led by transfers like Duce Chestnut and Zy Alexander.
PFF graded two LSU football cornerbacks as top 10 returners in the SEC
In the offseason, LSU football brought in 14 players through the transfer portal. Of those 14, five were defensive backs, including four cornerbacks.
While that may seem like a lot initially, this likely was the best thing they could have done for the team. They added plenty of young studs, including two of the highest-rated returners in the entire SEC.
According to PFF, cornerbacks Zy Alexander and Duce Chestnut are two of the highest-graded returning cornerbacks in the conference. This is huge for an LSU team that had little to no experience at the position heading into the offseason.
Alexander transfers in from Southeastern Louisiana and could provide valuable snaps for the Tigers throughout 2023. In three seasons with Southeastern, the cornerback recorded 31 tackles, five pass deflections and a whopping nine interceptions. He also brings a 79.9 rating to the team, which ranks fifth overall in the SEC.
Chestnut, on the other hand, comes from much further away, as heās spent most of his life in the Northeast, around the New Jersey area. In two seasons with the Syracuse Orange, Chestnut recordedĀ 83 tackles, nine pass deflections and four interceptions. Per PFF, he comes in at No. 10 overall in the SEC with a 76.3 grade.
Both players are taking a significant step up in level of competition as they head to the SEC. Still, they each have plenty of talent and should be able to jump in as impact players right away for LSU football. The Tigers had plenty of uncertainty heading into the offseason in this position room. Still, thanks to players like Chestnut and Alexander, the cornerback group should be good to go for 2023.
