Despite the up-and-down nature of the 2023 LSU football season, coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers still have an opportunity to earn a second-straight double-digit season.

In 2022, the Tigers achieved the feat against Big Ten West foe Purdue in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Well, you know what they say about how history repeats itself.

Today, it was revealed that LSU football will play Wisconsin, yet another Big Ten West foe, in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day.

This marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2016 when the Badgers secured a 16-14 victory over the Tigers to open the season. Now, the purple and gold seek redemption, aiming to potentially achieve another double-digit season.

Plenty to play for

While facing an unranked 7-5 Wisconsin might not be the most thrilling prospect, rest assured the team enters the game plenty motivated.

The most significant goal is the potential for reaching 10 wins in each of Coach Brian Kelly’s first two seasons. However, individual accomplishments are also at stake.

In Week 13 against Texas A&M, Malik Nabers became the all-time LSU football receptions leader, amassing 186 over his three seasons, surpassing Wendell Davis. Unsatisfied, Nabers now sets his sights on the receiving yards record, and a chance at breaking it could lead him to sticking around for one more game in the purple and gold.

“That record hasn’t been broken in over 20 years and whoever has the opportunity, I feel like they would want to do the same,” the star wide receiver said after the Texas A&M victory. “I came here to play with a chip on my shoulder. Didn’t care who I was playing, how many games we had left. I never left my team out there to dry so this record is mine to break.”

With 2,980 receiving yards in his career, the star junior is a mere 21 yards away from tying the record held by Josh Reed.

Although a matchup against Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl may not seem exhilarating at first glance, there’s potential for fireworks, and for LSU football, there’s much at stake. The game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CST on New Year’s Day 2024 in Orlando, FL.
