Coach Kim Mulkey and the women’s basketball team did it. Coach Jay Johnson and the baseball team did it. Could coach Brian Kelly and the football team do it? Bet MGM just released their annual national championship odds, and LSU football was right near the top, sitting in the top five nationally. The first step is to make the College Football Playoff, but Vegas clearly thinks Brian Kelly’s squad has a good chance of winning it all in 2023.

LSU football has the fifth-best national championship odds in college football

In 2019, the LSU football program achieved the ultimate goal in college football. They won the national championship, beating Clemson 42-25 in what turned out to be a relatively one-sided affair. Coach Ed Orgeron was in his third season with the program.

Before that, the Tigers won the championship in 2007 for coach Les Miles’ third season. If we go further back, the Tigers won the BCS title under coach Nick Saban in 2003. Each of the last three head coaches for LSU football has won a national championship with the program.

Can coach Brian Kelly continue the trend?

If we look ahead to 2023 and the odds market, Vegas appears to be relatively confident in the Tigers’ chances. Despite ESPN’s FPI giving LSU football just a 23.7 percent chance of making the College Football Playoff, Bet MGM views them as a top-five contender in college football.

The only teams ranked ahead of the purple and gold are Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan, respectively. These odds likely play a significant part in LSU’s chances of making the College Football Playoff as well.

If the Tigers are to make it into the “big dance” at all, they’ll likely have to get through the top two national championship contenders in all of college football. They play Alabama in the regular season, while Georgia will likely represent the SEC East in the SEC Championship.

If coach Brian Kelly can find a way to make a national championship run happen in his second year, it’s safe to say that Tiger Country will be fully bought in on the former Notre Dame coach. There’s lots to do before that can happen, but things are certainly trending upward for LSU football.
