LSU football safety Greg Brooks Jr has been diagnosed with brain cancer, the school reported Wednesday afternoon. His official diagnosis revealed that he has medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer which can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea and issues with fine motor skills. This news comes weeks following a surgery he received to remove a brain tumor.
LSU safety Greg Brooks Jr diagnosed with rare form of brain cancer
Word first got out that there was something wrong with LSU safety Greg Brooks Jr prior to the Tigers’ matchup vs. Mississippi State. At the time, coach Brian Kelly described it as a “medical emergency.”
It wasn’t until later that we found out he had received surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. He hasn’t seen the field since week two when the Tigers faced off against Grambling State at home.
In regard to the cancer itself, it sounds as though Brooks Jr’s surgery was successful and likely has months of rehabilitation ahead of him.
“The surgery was successful in removing the tumor, and there is no evidence that the cancer has spread,” reported Catherine O’Neal, the Chief Medical Officer at Our Lady of the Lake Health.
Before the 2023 season, Brooks Jr was voted on as a captain of the defense and is widely viewed as a leader for the team.
In his two appearances this season, the LSU football senior safety recorded eight tackles and two passes defended. Throughout his five collegiate seasons, he’s totaled 174 tackles, 13 passes defended, one sack, one forced fumble and six interceptions.
To help cover medical expenses for Greg Brooks Jr and his entire family, the Greg Brooks Victory Fund has been launched by the Tiger Athletic Foundation. Anyone can donate to the fund here to help support him as he continues treatment.
