Despite entering the spring transfer portal window with defensive tackle as the primary set goal, coach Brian Kelly and LSU football have made it clear that they aren’t against looking at other positions if the talent is there. For example, the Tigers most recently were reported to be in talks with talented transfer cornerback DaShawn Jones out of Wake Forest.
LSU looking to line up visit with highly sought-after transfer cornerback DaShawn Jones
The LSU football secondary finds itself in a bit of a confusing position overall heading into the 2024 college football season..
At safety, there seems to be no shortage of depth, with solid veterans Major Burns and Jardin Gilbert already looking likely as the projected starters.
However, when you take a glance at cornerback, it doesn’t take long to see a concern or two, particularly when it comes to overall depth and experience, as the majority of the two-deep are rising freshmen and sophomores heading into the summer.
In turn, it wouldn’t hurt in the slightest to add one or two veteran pieces who could come in and immediately compete for a starting role, which helps to explain why the Tigers were reportedly some of the first to show interest in talented transfer cornerback DaShawn Jones out of Wake Forest.
Currently on an official visit with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Jones saw some immediate SEC interest upon entering the portal, likely thanks in large part to the improvement he showed over the past two seasons combined.
Entering college as a three-star recruit, and the No. 138 cornerback nationally, according to 247Sports, the rising redshirt junior has outplayed just about any and all expectations placed on him early on. Having recorded 60 total tackles, three interceptions and 10 pass deflections in just the past two seasons combined, he’s turned himself into an impact player to know within the ACC.
Now, after entering the transfer portal and almost immediately receiving interest from national powerhouses such as Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and LSU, it’s just a matter of where he will leave his mark during the 2024 season.
While coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers are yet to set up an officially scheduled visit with the 6-foot, 181-pound cornerback out of Baltimore, MD, the interest is certainly there, so don’t be surprised to see some movement in the coming days.
