Regardless of anyone’s thoughts on LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels, there’s no denying his talent as a runner. In 2022, he was the Tigers’ leading rusher, carrying the ball 186 times for 885 yards and 11 touchdowns. Now, after revealing a weight increase to the college football world, he could be even more dangerous in 2023.
LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels reveals his impressive offseason weight gain
When it comes to weight gain in the world of sports, it’s either a very good or very bad thing. Ideally, a weight gain means an increase in muscle and overall strength.
For LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels, there was some concern regarding weight. A big reason for him being so lethal in college football is because of his running ability. Even as a quarterback, it’s nearly impossible to stop him in the open field, thanks to his speed and elusiveness. The only issue with that was if he were to face a big hit, injuries could have been a significant concern for his more slender body type.
Well, it appears the LSU football coaching staff took those concerns to heart in the offseason. At SEC Media Days earlier this week, Daniels revealed in an interview that he had gained 15 pounds from last year.
With the weight gain, he revealed that he’s up to 207 pounds. For context, the average weight of an NFL quarterback is somewhere around 220 pounds. While his 207 would still be closer to the lighter end of the spectrum, he’s taken a massive step in the right direction with this gain.
Is it possible that he could get faster with the weight increase?
While the quick answer to that question would typically be no, it might not be so simple in this case. Standing at 6-foot-4, LSU football quarterback Jayden Daniels has plenty of room to fill out his frame with some muscle gains. In addition, if you target the right muscles, there’s little doubt it can help with power and speed.
When discussing his weight gain, Daniels discussed what it could mean for his speed heading into 2023. He gave plenty of credit to the athletic trainers and strength coaches in determining how to add the weight properly.
“They said the more weight that you put on, the faster you actually get, so it’s exciting to see.”
For anyone who watched the former five-star quarterback in 2023, his speed was a big part of the LSU offense. In fact, he was able to get the offense out of some tough positions several times through the season, even using it to score a clutch touchdown versus Alabama in overtime.
If what he revealed at SEC Media Days turns out to be accurate, the LSU offense could be electric in 2023. Jayden Daniels will be a significant part of it, and if he’s rolling, so will the Tigers.
