LSU football has a significant need at the moment. While talent isnât necessarily an issue, depth is reason for concern in the Tigersâ defensive backfield. Coach Brian Kelly is aware of this as he has hit the recruiting trail in a major way regarding the safety and cornerback positions for the class of 2024. So far, it appears to be paying off in a major way as LSU football makes the top five for elite four-star safety KaâDavion Dotson.
Tigers are a finalist for one of the best class of 2024 defensive backs in Texas
When Louisiana State University hired Brian Kelly to coach the football program in 2021, he was faced with quite a challenge. That challenge was to essentially rebuild the defensive back group. Over the last two off-seasons, Kelly has brought in 10 defensive backs through the transfer portal.
While this method is becoming increasingly popular in todayâs version of college football, it isnât sustainable. If you want to become a contender and stay a contender for the college football playoff, high school recruiting needs to be a priority.
Now that coach Kelly has built up his roster a bit, his attention is shifting toward the younger guys, and itâs paying off. Over the weekend, LSU football was named a finalist for elite safety prospect KaâDavion Dotson.
Dotson is rated a four-star recruit and the No. 236 player in the country. In addition, heâs rated as the No. 19 safety in the country, so heâs an elite talent that should make a difference on just about any school he chooses.
As things stand, LSU football is the only SEC school out of his top five. Along with the Tigers, Texas, SMU, TCU and Oklahoma State were all named finalists.
If the purple and gold can secure his commitment, this would be huge for Brian Kelly. Not only would it display his ability to recruit the South, but also his ability to recruit the state of Texas, a state that consistently produces some of the best high school recruits in the country.
Can Brian Kelly seal the deal?
Anyone who follows high school football and recruiting is well aware of just how elite Texas football is. Just about every single Friday night is a holiday for the âLone Star Stateâ because of how passionate they are about high school football.
So naturally, when you know how to recruit the state of Texas, youâre recruiting at a high level. Thatâs precisely why itâs so important that LSU football appears to be in the lead to gain Dotsonâs talents.
According to 247Sports, 100 percent of crystal balls predict heâll end up in Baton Rouge. In addition, ON3 gives the Tigers a 90.3 percent chance of gaining his commitment.
If LSU football can win over his talents, not only would they be gaining an elite talent, but theyâd be increasing their pipeline into Texas. Thereâs plenty of time remaining for the class of 2024, but the Tigers are sitting well at the moment. This would be an incredible pick-up, and thereâs no doubt that four-star KaâDavion Dotson would look fantastic in the purple and gold.
