LSU football has two starters in their quarterback room for the 2023 season. Thereâs little doubt that senior Jayden Daniels will likely get the nod this season, but thereâs no denying the arm talent behind him. Most notably, Garrett Nussmeier has one of college footballâs best and strongest arms. Back in May, 247 Sports released a list of the strongest arms in college football, and unsurprisingly, Nussmeier was right there in the mix.
Garrett Nussmeier is a future star in college football
Since Garrett Nussmeier stepped foot on campus in Baton Rouge, thereâs been one thing abundantly clear about his game. He has an absolute cannon for an arm.
Nussmeier joined the LSU football program as a four-star and the No. 19 quarterback in the class of 2021. Itâs important to remember that this quarterback class had studs like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and JJ McCarthy in it.
Still, fans werenât quite sure what they had in Nussmeier. Yes, he has the kind of arm that can throw a ball the length of the field, but would he be able to take charge of the offense?
While Nussmeier is technically the backup this season, thereâs no doubt he could start. In fact, there were plenty of rumors throughout the offseason on whether he would transfer or not. It wasnât because of a lack of talent, but rather heâs almost too good to keep on the bench.
Still, the Lake Charles, LA, target decided to stay with the program. Itâs as good as guaranteed that heâll be the starter in 2024, and he might even choose to head to the NFL afterward.
The standout backup might have a top-10 arm in the country, according to 247 Sports
There are a lot of strong arms in college football. Guys like Tennesseeâs Joe Milton III and Texasâs Quinn Ewers are two of the best examples.
Is it possible that Garrett Nussmeier can be included in that discussion?
According to Brad Crawford of 247 Sports, Nussmeier very much belongs in that discussion. He ranked him No. 6 in the country, ahead of players like former five-stars Spencer Rattler and Drew Allar.
Here is what the 247 Sports analyst had to say about Nussmeierâs spot on his list:
âNussmeier showed off a powerful arm in LSUâs spring game and as far as Tigers coach Brian Kelly sees it, he has two starters heading into the 2023 season. We know Jayden Daniels is going to trot out with the 1s against Florida State in September, but Nussmeierâs talent level should not be understated. Daniels has a strong arm too, but it doesnât pack the ferocity Nussmeier brings to the table. He admittedly wants to shake the gunslinger label in Baton Rouge, but when youâve shown an ability to fire a missile downfield to move the chains, thatâs what happens. He carved up Georgia for 294 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Daniels in last seasonâs SEC Championship Game. That was the most Nussmeier had played since early September.â
