We currently live in an era where the College Football Playoff rules all. If you aren’t making it into the annual tournament, you’re automatically viewed in lower regard. For Tigers fans, the LSU football program broke through in 2019 – winning it all. Heading into 2023, expectations are beginning to peak for Brian Kelly’s squad, as they’ve been given a top-10 chance at making the playoffs.

LSU football receives top 10 odds at making the College Football Playoff, according to ESPN’s FPI

As we head into the 10th year of the four-team College Football Playoff, LSU football has made it into the field just once. So, what are the odds they can make it for a second time?

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) system, the Tigers have a 23.7 percent chance of making the CFP. ESPN’s FPI is a predictive system that measures a college football team’s strength to predict results in-season.

With LSU football having been given a 23.7 percent chance, the Tigers rank No. 8 nationally. The top five are Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Texas and Michigan, respectively. USC and Clemson help to make up the rest of the top eight.

Notably, LSU football will play three of the top 15 teams in the country, with Florida State, Alabama and Tennessee all on their schedule in 2023. Being in the SEC, coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers have an automatic disadvantage in making the annual playoff.

They’ll play Alabama, Florida State, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Florida during the regular season. Each of those programs rank in the top 25 of these rankings. Then, if they manage to get through that gauntlet relatively unscathed, Georgia will likely be waiting for them in the SEC championship.

It won’t be easy, but coach Brian Kelly has the pieces to make a College Football Playoff run happen. It’s important to remember that it’s only his second year in Baton Rouge, but if year one were any indication, it would be unwise to bet against this squad.
