It’s been a good year for LSU football and the quarterback position. Just days following the Heisman Trophy victory of Jayden Daniels, four-star commitment Ju’Juan Johnson was listed as a finalist for the MaxPreps National Player of the Year.

Few honors are as great as that of the MaxPreps National Player of the Year award when it comes to high school football.

Several elite players have gone through and won the award over the years, many of which now find themselves starring in the NFL. Some of the biggest names to have earned the honor include quarterback Bryce Underwood, defensive lineman Derrick Brown, quarterback Kyler Murray and running back Derrick Henry.

Now, as the football season comes to a close, it’s about that time to begin looking at this year’s potential candidates. Notably for Tiger fans, four-star LSU football commit Ju’Juan Johnson has quickly emerged as one of the top candidates.

When it comes to do-it-all players, few fit the mold better than four-star athlete Ju’Juan Johnson. Viewed as a safety at the college level, there’s no denying his athleticism as a whole. However, for Lafayette Christian Academy, they wanted to make sure the ball was in his hands as much as possible.

Naturally, that slotted him at the quarterback position, and to say he excelled would be an understatement. The future Tiger essentially rewrote the record books, setting state records in career touchdowns and career total offense.

Ju’Juan Johnson is joined by several other fantastic finalists, which include five-star Florida commit DJ Lagway, five-star Ohio State commit Jeremiah Smith, four-star Utah commit Isaac Wilson and three-star Wake Forest commit Jeremy Hecklinski.

Here’s what Zack Poff, of MaxPreps had to say about the four-star Tiger commitment and the decision to make him a finalist:

“Projected as a defensive back at the college level, Johnson threw for 3,626 yards and 41 touchdowns to go with 1,508 yards on the ground and 25 more scores. In a 57-21 win over McDonogh 35 (New Orleans) in the state quarterfinals, he topped Brock Berlin’s 24-year old state record for career total offense of 13,659 yards.”
