When it comes to building a program, one of the best ways to do so is by bringing in young talent who can make an impact early and often. For Coach Brian Kelly, this is even more crucial, considering the shortcomings of the Tiger defense in 2023. One notable name currently in the transfer portal, with the potential for an immediate impact, is five-star defensive line transfer Walter Nolen, who LSU football could make a push for.
LSU football a top contender for five-star transfer defensive line target Walter Nolen
The world of the 2023 transfer portal has been chaotic, to say the very least. A historic number of players have already participated, with over 500 players entering in just one day.
Despite the abundance of talent available, five-star defensive line transfer Walter Nolen stands out among all others. The former five-star recruit gained prominence when committing to Texas A&M as part of the class of 2022.
Now, as part of the class of 2024, he is once again a free agent, drawing interest from several top programs in the country.
During his tenure with the Aggies, the former and current No. 1 overall prospect recorded 66 tackles, including five sacks and one forced fumble. Despite the lack of recent statistics, heading into his junior year, he is projected to be one of the top players in the country, regardless of where he ends up.
As we find ourselves in the midst of December 6, 2023, the portal has been open for less than three days, but we’re already beginning to see some separation for the big-time defensive lineman.
If the report turns out to be correct, and LSU football is indeed one of his top options, it could be big for the Tigers as they look to build up their defense in 2024.
Coach Brian Kelly has repeatedly expressed interest in focusing on the defensive side of the ball heading into next season. If he can pull the Powell, TN, native away from favorites Tennessee and Michigan, it would be a major step in the right direction.
