Coach Brian Kelly and his defensive coaching staff are finally getting the ball rolling, and things are certainly looking up for the future of the LSU football class of 2025. Earlier today, Texas-based defensive lineman Zion Williams became the latest to announce his pledge to the purple and gold.
LSU football class of 2025 receives much needed boost from Texas-based defensive lineman Zion Williams
Up to this point, the LSU football class of 2025 group has undoubtedly been good, but it’s also been lacking in one very important spot. With only three defensive players committed, the coaching staff had some serious work to do on that side of the ball.
However, as of July 4, 2024, things have officially turned around in a major way, as Texas-based defensive lineman Zion Williams became the latest player to announce his pledge to the purple and gold.
Picking coach Brian Kelly’s squad ahead of big-time local programs such as TCU, Texas and Texas A&M, today’s commitment is significant for a variety of reasons. Not only is it a recruiting win over multiple in-conference rivals, but it may also be a sign of things to come, as it’s not uncommon for things to work with the snowball effect in the world of college football recruiting.
Officially listed as a 6-foot-4, 295-pound defensive lineman out of Lufkin, TX, Williams ranks as the No. 298 player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite, as well as No. 33 at his position.
While the talented blue chip defender hasn’t exactly put up dominant numbers at the high school level – recording 68 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks in the last two seasons – it’s his elite size combined with solid athleticism that’s set him up as such a highly sought-after recruit.
Receiving offers from top programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M, there’s little denying his upside. If anything, it will just be a matter of cleaning things up at the college level in addition to adding even more weight to his already impressive frame.
Now, with 13 total commitments, the LSU football class of 2025 officially sits at No. 4 nationally, along with No. 3 among SEC foes. While Williams is just their first pledge from a defensive lineman, this has the potential to be a sign of things to come, as the purple and gold remain in the hunt for several more blue chip recruits spread throughout the country.
