After a tough ending to a surprisingly good season from LSU baseball, coach Jay Johnson is officially in offseason mode and already appears to be doing some impressive work. Earlier today, the program landed their first transfer portal commitment of 2024 as right-handed relief pitcher Chandler Dorsey will join the purple and gold next season.

LSU baseball lands first transfer commitment of the 2024 offseason in talented right-handed relief pitcher

It was a rocky start to the 2024 offseason for the purple and gold, as the program almost immediately lost seven players to the portal, headlined by a concerning number of pitchers. With that said, there’s something of a balance to be expected in the world of college baseball, particularly when it involves a team as consistent as that of LSU baseball.

Earlier today, coach Jay Johnson finally received his first encouraging news of the offseason, landing his first transfer portal commitment in high-potential right-handed relief pitcher Chandler Dorsey out of USF.

A rising junior out of Lakeland, FL, Dorsey is officially listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, and it doesn’t take too much tape to realize just why so many scouts hold him in such a high regard.

Having recorded a career high 3.60 ERA during the 2024 season, Dorsey served USF as their primary closer this past season, and for good reason. Allowing just 20 hits compared to 41 strikeouts, the rising junior held opponents to zero earned runs in 18 of his appearances which included six straight to close out the year.

While it’s hard to say where Dorsey will figure into the 2025 LSU baseball pitching rotation, it can likely be expected that he at least makes some form of an impact, particularly when it gets later into the season. The SEC is a completely different animal from the AAC, but his 95+ mph fastball is the kind of throw that can translate to just about any level of college baseball.

With the recent loss of talented pitchers Cam Johnson, Aidan Moffett, Micah Bucknam and Nic Bronzini, don’t be surprised to see at least one or two more pitchers join the program through the transfer portal this offseason. Until then, coach Jay Johnson is off to an excellent start and is likely nowhere near finished.
