Coming off a somewhat disappointing season that ended just short of Omaha, coach Jay Johnson has LSU baseball right back in the national spotlight, landing as the No. 2 team in the country with a little over a month until the start of the 2025 season.

Coach Jay Johnson, LSU baseball land at No. 2 nationally in latest preseason top-25

With the new year, comes a flow of preseason college baseball news, and Tiger fans have plenty of reason to be excited about the upcoming 2025 season.

For starters, just two years removed from their last national championship victory, LSU baseball has quickly found itself right back in the midst of that conversation, thanks in large part to head coach Jay Johnson and his impressive transfer portal chops.

Having already possessed the No. 1 recruiting class of 2025 in college baseball, with 20 commitments (12 top 100), things were already looking up for the fourth-year purple and gold coach. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean he was satisfied.

Only adding to an already competitive roster, Johnson would then go on to bring in nine of the top 100 college transfers for the 2025 season, which includes three ranked within the top-10.

In short, Jay Johnson went into the offseason ready to make a splash, and the world of college baseball has taken notice, as the Tigers most recently landed as the No. 2 team in the country, according to Perfect Game, in their latest preseason top-25.

While the transfer, and freshman additions will understandably snag the bulk of preseason praise, it’s important to note that the purple and gold are bringing back some serious talent as well. From postseason master outfielder Josh Pearson, to slugging first baseman Jared Jones, to electric right-handed pitcher Gavin Guidry, this is a roster that has claim to no shortage of veteran presence.

If anything, the biggest question for Jay Johnson heading into the 2025 season, is whether or not he can get the group to mesh in time for postseason play. Still, Johnson has quickly inserted himself into the conversation of best coach in college baseball, so if anyone can make it work, it’s him.

The purple and gold will get their season started in a little over a month against Purdue Fort Wayne on February 14, 2025, in what will take place as a three-game series between the two programs at Alex Box Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA.
