It would be an understatement to say the LSU baseball team needed that one. After being ranked No. 1 for most of the 2023 season, a series loss to Auburn derailed things a bit. The Tigers slid to No. 2 until yet another series loss, this time to Mississippi State. Now, having fallen to No. 5 in the rankings, LSU baseball desperately needed a “get-right” game, and they may have found one through a victory over McNeese State.
LSU baseball earns 40th victory of the 2023 season
Let’s make this as clear as possible: LSU is very good at baseball. Yes, they’ve slipped in the rankings the last couple of weeks, but that doesn’t change the fact that LSU baseball is elite. They compete in what could easily be the most challenging conference to play in and still have one of the best records in all of college baseball. While it might be easy to take wins for granted, it’s important to appreciate just how good this team is.
Today, the Tigers recorded their 40th victory of the season with their win over McNeese State. The game started with some back-and-forth action as the teams traded runs through the first five innings. That was until LSU baseball put their foot on the gas. Down by one in the sixth, the Tigers recorded back-to-back home runs from designated hitter Cade Beloso and first baseman Hayden Travinski. They wouldn’t let up another run for the rest of the game and would cruise to their eventual win.
While a win is a win, it’s hard not to have a sense of uneasiness leaving that game. Pitching is still a significant question mark outside of Paul Skenes. If LSU baseball could play Skenes every inning of every game, they’d be golden. Unfortunately, that’s simply not feasible. If the Tigers want to make a run at the Men’s College World Series this year, the bullpen will need to step up in a major way.
LSU baseball is headed to Athens, GA, for their final series of the season before the SEC Tournament. Figuring out the pitching situation will be a massive point of emphasis for this series, so don’t be surprised to see auditions continue throughout this weekend.
