Coming off a convincing 95-44 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Monday earlier this week, LSU women’s basketball now gets set for an in-state matchup against the Northwestern State Demons. While the first game of the season was undoubtedly impressive, head coach Kim Mulkey wasn’t exactly jumping to praise her 2024 squad, but in turn pointed attention towards the future, where she thinks things could be shining bright for the purple and gold.
LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey expecting some big things from her team in 2024-25
Basketball season is officially upon us, and relatively unsurprisingly, the Tigers are once again facing some major expectations. Even more importantly, though, coach Kim Mulkey and her squad certainly aren’t shying away from them.
LSU women’s basketball got their season off to a hot start on Monday, defeating ASUN opponent, Eastern Kentucky (0-1), by a score of 95-44, and it was about as complete a victory as you could imagine.
With that said, it was only the first game of the season for the purple and gold squad, and there’s still lots of adjusting left to be done. While speaking with the media in the postgame on Monday, coach Kim Mulkey had plenty to say about potential adjustments we could see moving forward with her group.
“We have depth, but we don’t have it right now. I’m still piecing stuff together. I played Mikaylah [Williams] at the four some. Our depth will definitely help us down the road, but we’ve gotta get them out on that floor everyday.”
“If we can do that, then we can play physical, we can play a lot of kids, we can press – that’s why I kept pressing. That’s what we’re gonna do. I don’t know if that’s gonna be our identity, but if you’re gonna get on that floor, I better be able to press, and you better be able to help create some things. So, that’s why we’re doing that start to finish as much as we can.”
Over the last couple of seasons, LSU women’s basketball has somewhat come to be known for their physicality and willingness to put their body on the line if it means they’ll get an extra possession or two. While there was certainly that willingness to be physical in the season opening matchup, it’s important to remember that the pieces are all still slowly fitting together.
In turn, it shouldn’t be all that surprising if this 2024 team continues to only get better as the season moves along.
“We’re good enough to win not playing very good, but we’re also a team that I just think’s gonna get better,” Mulkey continued. “I think we’re just gonna get better and better. Just gotta get them all on page in practice everyday.”
The Tigers will again hit the floor later this evening, as they get set for their matchup against in-state Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. CT. For those hoping to watch the game this evening, you can either see it in-person at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, or watch it from home or on the road live on ESPN+.
