An impressive offseason just continues to push on for coach Kim Mulkey and her basketball program. Most recently, the Tigers announced the hiring of LSU women’s basketball legend Seimone Augustus as an assistant coach on the 2024-25 staff.

From high school to college, LSU women’s basketball legend Seimone Augustus has put together one of the most impressive basketball careers the city of Baton Rouge has ever seen.

Coming out of Capitol High School in Baton Rouge, LA, Augustus was bound to be a star from the moment she stepped foot on campus for the purple and gold. Having brought her high school to back-to-back state titles in 2001 and 2002, she only continued her success at the next level.

She’d go on to bring the Tigers to three straight Final Four appearances to go along with her hefty list of personal accolades – including twice being recognized as the Naismith National Player of the Year in women’s college basketball.

From there, the 6-foot-1 guard was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft to the Minnesota Lynx, where she put together yet another legendary career.

Now, as of today, she was most recently hired as an assistant under head coach Kim Mulkey for the 2024-25 season, and it’s safe to say the veteran coach is excited to have the LSU women’s basketball legend back home.

“It is an exciting day for the LSU women’s basketball program to bring Seimone Augustus back to join our staff. As a player at LSU, Seimone helped transform the program as the best player in the nation. She brought LSU to national prominence,” coach Mulkey said in a statement following the announced hiring of coach Augustus.

“She will be a tremendous member on our staff as someone with great experience who has excelled at every level of the game from high school in Baton Rouge to college to the WNBA to the Olympics. Her expertise in the game will benefit our team and allow our players the opportunity to learn from a Hall of Famer who has exhibited great class throughout her entire career.”

The LSU women’s basketball legend also took the time to give a statement of her own, expressing the excitement that she has to be a part of the program once more.

“Life always guides you to where you belong. Thus my path has led me home. Gracing me with an opportunity to further my coaching career within a program that I hold dearly. They say experience is the greatest teacher, I am truly excited about the knowledge and wisdom I will gain working alongside of legendary coach Mulkey and reconnecting with my former coach, Bob Starkey. A fighting Tiger once more, I look forward to pouring into this generation of Lady Tigers. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger. A new chapter begins…see you at the PMAC.”

Rave reviews from some current Tigers

As a part of the purple and gold from 2002 until 2006, Augustus did just about everything she could for her team, and plenty of wins followed fairly quickly. Recording 22.7 points, 1.8 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 0.4 blocks per game, she helped lead her team to 121 total victories in her four years, and she’ll now look to bring the current Tiger roster to similar success.

Notably, it appears that several returning players are abundantly excited to have the LSU women’s basketball legend on board, taking to Twitter to express their excitement.

We don’t yet have an official date for the start of the 2024-25 women’s college basketball season, but for now, it’s safe to say there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the purple and gold program following this most recent hire.
