Continuing some already impressive work by LSU football recruiting during the class of 2025 cycle, the Tigers most recently received a prediction to eventually land three-star defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr out of Savannah, GA.
LSU football recruiting predicted to land big-time Georgia-based defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr
When it comes to the class of 2025 recruiting trail, very few programs have found nearly as much success as Brian Kelly and his coaching staff have of late.
In the last week alone, the LSU football recruiting efforts have landed the Tigers two different five-star recruits, as cornerback DJ Pickett and wide receiver Derek Meadows both made their decisions late last week. Now, relatively unsurprisingly, the momentum hasnât quite slowed down yet, and the program most recently received a prediction from On3 recruiting expert Shea Dixon for Georgia-based defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr to the purple and gold.
Officially listed as a 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive lineman out of Savannah, GA, Mathis Jr isnât exactly the highest rated in the cycle â sitting at No. 451 nationally, and No. 40 among fellow defensive linemen, according to the On3 Industry Ranking â but the potential for a significant boost is certainly there.
Possessing over 30 total offers from programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Miami, the very best in college football clearly see something in the three-star recruit thatâs worth going after. Additionally, having recorded 50 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and six sacks in 2022, production isnât exactly a concern.
As we stand today, Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Miami appear to be the top contenders in this recruitment, as he recently took an official visit to each within the last two months.
With an impressive first step and almost shocking strength for his size, Mathis Jr has the ability to make a fairly early impact for a power four program in the future â its just a matter of which one.
The LSU football recruiting class of 2025 currently ranks No. 3 nationally, as well as No. 2 in-conference, trailing only Alabama and Ohio State. If defensive line coach Bo Davis can convince the talented Georgia defensive lineman to make the move over to Louisiana, he would become the ninth defensive commitment in what has quickly become a truly elite group for the Tigers.
