When it comes to the LSU football defense in 2023, it’s been tough to watch at times. However, former transfer safety Andre Sam has been one of the few bright spots. Earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly spoke on his progression throughout this season.

Former transfer safety Andre Sam has been a sneaky good piece for the LSU football defense

Steady pieces have been tough to come by for the LSU football defense, especially in the secondary. Several cornerbacks and safeties have found themselves injured or unavailable, and it’s made things far more difficult for the Tigers as a whole.

Still, for the pieces that have stayed healthy and available, it’s shown in their progress throughout the season. One of the better examples is former transfer Andre Sam.

While the safety didn’t see the field too consistently early in 2023, he’s quickly become one of the best players on the Tiger defense. One of his more impressive showings came last week vs. Army when he recorded three tackles and two interceptions.

So, according to coach Brian Kelly, what exactly has been the key to his continued progression this season?

“I would say patience, control, playing within himself,” Kelly told the media on Tuesday“I thought maybe he played a little bit outside of himself a little bit. Excited to play, maybe played a little bit outside of himself, and now the game has slowed down for him.”

“And you could see that he’s in the right place, not overrunning things,” he continued. “I thought early on in the season, he maybe played a little bit out of control. Just patience, and just much more in control as a player.”

Consistency will be critical regarding the Tiger defense for the remainder of 2023. If they stay healthy, there’s no reason LSU football can’t compete with the rest of the SEC.
