The future of SEC baseball is headed in a relatively unpredictable direction. More specifically, in 2025, the conference will add Oklahoma and Texas to the party, as conference expansion will bring it to 16 teams total. Earlier today, the SEC announced the future permanent opponents for LSU baseball, as the Tigers will play Mississippi State and Texas A&M every season.
SEC announces LSU baseball permanent opponents with conference expansion
The SEC will welcome two additions to the conference in 2025, which means adjustments to the overall schedule for each sport. For baseball, each team will have two permanent opponents each.
Furthermore, each season, the teams will play eight rotating conference opponents. In total, each series will consist of three games, adding up to a total of 30 conference games.
For coach Jay Johnson and LSU baseball, Mississippi State and Texas A&M were the designated opponents. Permanent opponents were decided on primarily based on general proximity and strength of schedule, among other factors.
The Tigers played both schools each of the last two seasons, coming away with a total record of 7-6. With plenty more series with those schools on the horizon, expect plenty of closely contested matches over the coming years.
The complete list of SEC permanent opponents with conference expansion is as follows:
- Alabama: Auburn, Tennessee
- Arkansas: Missouri, Ole Miss
