Well, ladies and gentlemen, the night has finally arrived. That’s right, the College Football Playoff rankings have officially been revealed for the first time of the 2024 season. Even despite coming off their second loss of the season against Texas A&M (7-2) just two weeks ago, it doesn’t appear that the playoff committee is too concerned, as LSU football remains solidly in the race for a spot in the bracket, sitting at No. 15 nationally.

College Football Playoff Rankings: 2024 LSU football holding strong in the playoff race with four games remaining

Exiting week nine of college football, it wasn’t exactly rare to see people counting out LSU football as reasonable contenders for the 2024 College Football Playoff.

Coming off their second loss in just eight total games, things were trending in a very poor direction, and it even caused a fair share of fans to forget exactly what lies ahead for the Tigers.

Oddly enough, less than two weeks later and looking ahead to week 11, we live in a very different world as far as projections go. Earlier Tuesday evening, the first 2024 College Football Playoff rankings were revealed to the world, and as it would turn out, that second loss didn’t drop the purple and gold nearly as far as many might have anticipated.

Landing at No. 15 nationally, LSU football remains just a few spots out of the playoff bracket, and with a top-15 matchup coming up later this week against No. 11 Alabama (6-2), things could look very different in just a matter of days.

Add in the fact that the Tigers are currently being viewed as one of the top candidates to reach the SEC Championship in 2024, and coach Brian Kelly has to be feeling good about where his team stands, all things considered.

Similarly to what we’ve seen all season long, this week’s version of the top 10 teams nationally included a hefty dose of both SEC and Big Ten teams. Interestingly enough, the Big Ten currently leads the way with four teams within the top-10 (No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State, No. 8 Indiana), while the SEC has just three (No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Texas, No. 7 Tennessee).

Even so, the primarily southern focused conference still leads the way as far as the overall top-25 is considered. Sitting with eight total in the rankings, the SEC leads the way by a bit of a landslide, as no other conference has more than five representatives.

LSU football will next get the opportunity to bolster their resume this Saturday, November 9, 2024, against the Alabama Crimson Tide at 6:30 p.m. CT. The matchup is set to take place in Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA, and will be available to watch live on ABC or ESPN+.
