LSU football dropped a heartbreaking loss to Alabama in last night’s matchup. Despite the loss, quarterback Jayden Daniels had yet another solid performance, which was cut short due to a brutal hit in the second half. After the game, coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the star quarterback.
Coach Brian Kelly talks about the performance of Jayden Daniels in loss to Alabama
In yesterday’s loss to Alabama, quarterback Jayden Daniels gave his team everything he had. He took several big hits and led his team to a 21-21 tie at the half.
“He was good tonight,” coach Brian Kelly said postgame. “He wasn’t great. He would like to be considered great every week. He was good; he was good. He was really good.”
On the day, he recorded 382 total yards and three touchdowns while turning the ball over just once. The turnover was, without a doubt, costly, and despite his performance, the Tigers scored just seven points in the second half.
“And he was tough,” the Tiger head coach continued. “The runs that he had tonight were outstanding runs that kept drives alive. If he’s not out there, we’re not even in the game. He made a difference, but I’m sure there’s gonna be some things that he would like to do better as well.”
Unfortunately, early in the fourth quarter, quarterback Jayden Daniels was knocked out of the game with a head injury. For LSU, this was essentially the end of the game, as the Crimson Tide ran the ball at will until the clock hit zero.
Outside of Daniels, the offense struggled in a major way. The team gained just 96 yards outside of the star quarterback, which includes him having missed the final two drives of the day.
Injury update for the star quarterback
It’s never a good thing when your starting quarterback goes down with an injury. For coach Brian Kelly and LSU football, it could be even worse, considering that Jayden Daniels is currently one of the top Heisman Trophy candidates in college football.
Near the start of the fourth quarter, Daniels suffered a head injury following a hard hit from Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner.
When Kelly was asked about the injury postgame, he unfortunately didn’t have much of an answer, explaining that they’d need more tests.
“He had a head injury. Was not able to come back. We’ll obviously have to put him through more testing before I can accurately say whether that was concussion, non-concussion, things of that nature.”
LSU football returns to the field this Saturday, as they’ll take on the Gators of Florida in Baton Rouge at 6:30 p.m. CST.
