LSU football is set to face Ole Miss today at 5:00 p.m. CST in Oxford, MS, and it could become quite the offensive battle. Both teams rank in the top 15 in the country in scoring offense, and earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly outlined the key to slowing down the Rebels in 2023.
Coach Brian Kelly gives out the key to slowing down the Ole Miss offense
Through four weeks in 2023, LSU and Ole Miss have combined for an incredible 339 points scored. For context, that means the teams are averaging 42.4 points per game.
When it comes to offense, these are two of the premier programs in college football in 2023. In turn, we could see quite a few points on the board this evening.
When preparing for a game like that, it’s essential to go in with a plan of action. For LSU football and coach Brian Kelly, he might have found the key earlier this week.
“They are explosive. And that’s traditionally a Lane Kiffin offense, is explosive plays,” coach Brian Kelly said while speaking with the media. “They do a really good job of setting things up. They’re gonna run the ball and be patient, and then take shots over your head. And that’s what we have to be clearly aware of, and we were last year. We gave up that first drive, first couple of drives, and then I think we settled in nicely in keeping the ball in front of us.”
“And that’s really gonna be the key for us again in this game, is minimizing the big plays, being fundamentally sound defensively. And again, a lot of it comes off of the running game and the play-action pass, so if you can eliminate the running game, or at least control the running game, it puts you in a better position against the deep shots.”
The LSU football defense has struggled of late. In fact, they currently rank No. 70 in the country in scoring defense, allowing 25 points per game. If the Tigers are going to come out on top today, the defense will need to be a big part of it.
