One of the more underrated aspects of any offense is the offensive line. In the offseason for LSU football, one of the big questions was whether any freshmen would take a starting job at some point through 2023. However, earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the competition as it relates to Miles Frazier and Zalance Heard.

Earlier this season, one of the big questions along the offensive line surrounded freshman offensive tackle Zalance Heard. There’s little doubt that he has the potential to be one of the best players on this team; it’s just a matter of when we see him on the field.

If he were to start, though, it would require some moving pieces along the entire offensive line. It was doubtful that starting right tackle Emery Jones Jr would ever get benched, so that meant he would move over to right guard as Heard slipped in at right tackle.

Unfortunately, this implies that the redshirt junior Miles Frazier would be moved to the bench. However, it doesn’t look like that will be happening any time soon.

Earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly gave an update on the play of the starting right guard and if we would see a switch at any point.

“I think consistency and performance,” Brian Kelly said regarding the play of Miles Frazier at right guard. “We felt like we’ve been playing at a high level, and to move somebody into that position, especially the right tackle position, I think it requires you to knock the champion out in a sense. You know, Miles (Frazier) was the starter for us, and I don’t think this is a slight on Lance (Heard) at all; I think he’s played well when he’s gone in there.”

“But we just felt like that rotation needed to be such where we were getting outstanding play, or even better play than Miles,” Kelly continued. “And Miles has played really well – better than he played last year. So, I think that consistency at right guard has really prompted us to be more consistent in keeping him in the game.”

There’s no doubt the LSU football offensive line has played at an elite level thus far in 2023. The offense ranks among the best in the country, and it all starts with the big men up front.
