LSU football found themselves a gem in the form of head coach Brian Kelly. Last season, Kelly brought the Tigers to a 10-4 record in his first season with the Tigers, showing just how promising the hire could be. Earlier this week, the annual CBS Sports coach rankings were released, listing the best of the best. Unsurprisingly, Kelly was listed right up near the top, finishing as a top 10 head coach in the rankings.
In CBS Sports’ 2023 power five coach rankings, Brian Kelly listed a top 10 head coach
Every year since 2016, CBS Sports has released a ranking of the top power five coaches in the country. The rankings are formed using a panel of experts who take the time to rank each coach.
In this year’s edition of the coach rankings, LSU football’s Brian Kelly ranked as the sixth overall coach in the country. This should come as little to no surprise, as Kelly has found success everywhere he’s gone. In his time as a head coach, he has a record of 294-101-2. Whether it’s at Grand Valley, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Notre Dame or LSU, he wins. Even more impressive is that he’s shown no sign of slowing down.
Here’s what CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli had to say regarding Brian Kelly‘s ranking:
“Kelly won at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame. So, you probably shouldn’t have been surprised by Kelly winning the SEC West in his first season at LSU. It turns out the man is a good football coach. Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU because he believed it gave him a clearer path toward a national title, and nothing that happened in his first season at Death Valley suggests he has bad eyesight.”
Brian Kelly has always been viewed as an elite coach, but the one blemish on his record is the lack of championships at the Division I level. Now, being with LSU football in the SEC, Kelly will be looking for both a conference and national championship. If he can accomplish one of those goals this year, don’t be surprised to see another rise for Kelly in the 2024 rankings.
