Every week, the Tigers’ football program announces a “Freak of the Week” based on performance in practice. Last week, sophomore defensive back Laterrance Welch was chosen for the weekly honor. This week, they moved the award to the offense as backup LSU football quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was recognized.
Backup LSU football quarterback Garrett Nussmeier named “Freak of the Week”
The future is bright for LSU football at the quarterback position. For 2023, senior Jayden Daniels has already been announced as the starter. Still, that hasn’t stopped many fans from looking to the future and who their soon-to-be starter may be.
Redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier is a former four-star, having been ranked No. 152 overall in the class of 2021, according to 247 Sports. He also stands at 6-foot-1, 202 pounds.
Since setting foot on campus, Nussmeier has taken significant steps forward. He has an absolute cannon for an arm, with deadly accuracy on the deep ball.
Naturally, when you have talent like that, you need to work for it. That’s likely why he was recently honored as “Freak of the Week” for the Tigers’ football program.
Nussmeier is the future at quarterback for the Tigers. In fact, if he continues to work and improve the way he has, he has the potential to start just one season for LSU football before moving to the next level. After the 2024 season, he’ll be eligible for the NFL draft, so enjoy him while it lasts, Tigers fans!
Senior QB Jayden Daniels has confidence in what Nussmeier can do in the future
In the offseason, one of the biggest question marks on the LSU football roster was whether or not Garrett Nussmeier would return to the program. He wasn’t yet eligible for the draft, and he seemed to be happy at LSU.
Instead, the question arose because he was good enough to start just about anywhere in the country. So when coach Brian Kelly and the coaching staff were able to retain him, it was a massive victory for the coaching staff.
Not only does it give you at least one more year of elite quarterback play, but depth at the position is almost unfair for the 2023 season.
What makes it even better is that the entire room supports each other. Jayden Daniels has spent significant time to acknowledging the talent behind him, expressing just how excited he is to see what Nussmeier can do as a starter in 2024.
With Nussmeier earning the title of “Freak of the Week,” it’s hard not to be excited to see how much he continues to improve. The future is bright, and the Tigers have no shortage of elite quarterback talent heading into 2023.
