Coach Brian Kelly is making something abundantly clear with this class of 2024 recruiting cycle. He knows just how much talent is in the state of Louisiana, and he does not want to let it go. One of the most talented in the class is tight end Trey’Dez Green, a recent LSU football commit. What makes this commitment so much better is the fact that Brian Kelly loves the tight end position. Green has the potential to become a star in Baton Rouge, and Kelly’s offense could be a big part of it.
Tight end Trey’Dez Green is a recent LSU football commit to watch
When you grow up in southern Louisiana, you typically grow up watching one very specific team on Saturdays. That team is none other than Louisiana State University football.
Tight end prospect Trey’Dez Green grew up in Jackson, LA, less than an hour north of Baton Rouge. Naturally, it didn’t come as much of a surprise when he eventually announced his commitment to stay home and play for the LSU football team.
Green, a 6-foot-6, 239-pound prospect out of southern Louisiana, is ranked as the No. 56 player in the country and the No. 3 tight end in the class of 2024 per 247Sports. What might be the best thing about this signing is the fact that he is the No. 2 player in Louisiana. One of the biggest concerns when Brian Kelly signed on as coach of the LSU football program was whether he could recruit the state of Louisiana. That no longer appears to be too much of a concern.
Aside from football, Green also plans to be on the LSU basketball team. He is currently unranked by 247Sports and doesn’t project to be much of an immediate impact player on the court. Still, with the basketball program undergoing a rebuild, the door is certainly open for early playing time.
Brian Kelly and the tight end position
LSU football coach Brian Kelly is something of a tight end guru. The position has always played a significant part in his offenses, and generally, it’s paid off. Often, this style of offense is synonymous with the Midwest United States. Schools like Notre Dame, Iowa and Michigan have become known for their tight end play, putting some of the best tight ends into the NFL year in and year out.
In his time coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Kelly had eight tight ends drafted into the NFL, including players like Kyle Rudolph and Cole Kmet. Even in the most recent draft, Kelly played a significant part in developing 2nd round pick Michael Mayer.
Now, as Kelly makes his transition to the SEC, he’s bringing that Midwest mentality with him. In his first season with LSU football, freshman tight end Mason Taylor caught 38 passes for 414 yards and three touchdowns. In contrast, in the season prior, the tight end with the most receptions was Kole Taylor, with a grand total of six.
With Coach Brian Kelly’s track record with the tight end position, Green has made a fantastic decision for his future. As we’re already beginning to see with Mason Taylor, don’t be surprised to see Trey’Dez Green as a household name before his time in Baton Rouge is all said and done.
