It’s been a quiet few days as far as the LSU transfer portal has been, but we may be approaching some big-time announcements in the not too distant future. Possibly most notably, major defensive line transfer target Damonic Williams out of TCU is currently on campus in Baton Rouge and may be approaching a final decision in the coming days.
LSU defensive line transfer target Damonic Williams has arrived in Baton Rouge
Right from the start of the 2024 spring transfer portal window, there was never any doubt about where coach Brian Kelly and LSU would focus their attention. In fact, the Tiger head coach was so confident in his plans, that he announced it to the media the day before the National L-Club Spring Game.
“I don’t see any other positions that we need to be in the transfer portal for other than the defensive tackle position, really,” Kelly said while previewing his team’s final practice of the spring.
In turn, aside from a select few, the purple and gold have focused in on the defensive interior solely, bringing several of the top uncommitted transfers on campus throughout the last few weeks, with defensive line transfer target Damonic Williams being the most recent to make his way to Baton Rouge earlier today.
Williams has been a name to keep a close eye on since he first entered the portal, as he immediately became the top defensive line transfer target for coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers.
It becomes even more notable when you consider the fact that LSU was one of just six visit destinations on his list, and Baton Rouge managed to get the final say in his recruitment.
Decision day on the horizon?
Unfortunately for the Tigers, getting him on campus is just one small part of what will likely turn out to be a tight battle up to the very end. Along with Baton Rouge, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound Mission Hills, CA, product has also visited Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas.
Important to note, it seems as though three of his visits went particularly well, as Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas are the current favorites in his recruitment, making these next few days all the more important for coach Brian Kelly and the future of his defensive line room.
Over the last two seasons combined, Damonic Williams has been about as efficient a defensive lineman as you could hope for, having amassed 60 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
With this being his final scheduled visit, it’s expected that we could see a decision sometime later this week – however, the situation is fluid. Regardless, LSU having the last opportunity to get him on campus and throw their pitch his way is ideal, and gives the Tigers a fighting chance to ultimately land a commitment from the big-time defensive line transfer target.
For now, though, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas are the teams to beat, so it will be curious to see how things are trending by the time his visit comes to a close later this week.
