As we rapidly approach the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl between the Tigers of Baton Rouge and Wisconsin, we’re slowly beginning to get a feel for what the two rosters will look like on New Year’s Day. Today, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels took to Twitter to announce that he has opted out of the bowl game and will now look ahead to the NFL.

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels will not play in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl

What a career it’s been for LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. In just two seasons with the program, he’s cemented himself in Tiger history, becoming one of the all-time best signal callers to ever represent the purple and gold.

Over his five years at the collegiate ranks, he’s amassed an incredible total of 16,056 yards and 123 touchdowns. Notably, a major portion of those totals came during his time in Baton Rouge, as he gained 8,744 yards and 78 touchdowns over the last two seasons combined.

However, all good things must come to an end. For LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, that means it’s time to begin looking ahead to his upcoming journey to the NFL. Unfortunately for Tiger fans, this also means he has officially opted out of the upcoming 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl game.

Coach Brian Kelly initially addressed the newest Heisman winner’s decision a few weeks back on December 6, but revealed that he hadn’t come up with a fully fleshed out answer yet.

“Who wouldn’t want him to play? I mean everybody would love to see Jayden Daniels play one last time,” the Tiger head coach said when asked whether Jayden Daniels would play in the bowl game. “I’m a fan. I’m his coach, but I’m a fan of Jayden Daniels. But he’s gotta make a decision, and clearly I see both sides of it. So, we’ll provide him with all the things necessary for him to make an informed decision, but he hasn’t got to that level yet.”

However, now that the star senior has officially opted out, coach Brian Kelly is tasked with creating a game plan that will best fit the next man up in the quarterback rotation.

Redshirt sophomore Garrett Nussmeier will likely start vs. Wisconsin

With Jayden Daniels having made his official decision on the ReliaQuest Bowl, it’s officially Garrett Nussmeier’s time to shine.

Through his young career, the redshirt sophomore quarterback has experienced some big moments and some less than ideal ones as well. Still, when given the chance, there’s no doubt about his NFL-caliber arm and overall potential.

Through three seasons with the program, the Lake Charles, LA, native has thrown the ball 174 times for 1,325 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions.

We’re yet to get any official word on wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr for the bowl game. Still, regardless of who lines up out wide for Nussmeier, expect for him to throw it deep at least once or twice.

After the stellar season Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels has experienced, Tiger fans likely have some high expectations for their starting quarterback. Still, Daniels is confident in his position room, and it will undoubtedly be exciting to sit back and watch the beginning of the next chapter in LSU football.
