LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson is truly pulling off miracles in 2024. After starting out about as poorly as one could imagine, the Tigers are now looking like one of the odds-on favorites to win the entire College Baseball World Series.

And just like that, coach Jay Johnson has made it so that the 3-12 start to SEC play for LSU baseball has officially become nothing but a distant memory.

After losing five straight series’ against Mississippi State, Florida, Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Tennessee, the purple and gold have since become one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 18 out of their last 24 games, including a trip to the SEC Tournament Championship, where they fell just short against No. 1 Tennessee by a score of 3-4.

In turn, after entering the SEC Tournament as a longshot to even make the 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament, they’re now being viewed as one of the teams with the best chances of winning the entire College Baseball World Series.

According to DraftKings, coach Jay Johnson and the Tigers now have the 3rd best odds to win the entire tournament, sitting at +900 for the time being. Notably, the only teams with better odds are Tennessee (+600) and Texas A&M (+500), both of which have either lost or have come close to losing to LSU throughout the early portions of the 2024 season.

With that said, there’s still a long road ahead of the Tigers if they want any chance at even competing for a trip to Omaha. The tournament is set to start for the program on Friday, as they’ll take on Wofford (41-18) in Chapel Hill, NC, at 11:00 a.m. CST, which will be available to watch live on ESPNU/ESPN+. From there, they’ll either face No. 4 North Carolina (42-13) or Long Island (33-23), depending on Friday’s results.

While there are no guarantees in college baseball, it’s hard to deny that coach Jay Johnson has his team playing like one of the very best the sport has to offer. Now, it’s just a matter of continuing to go out and fight for each and every win, as we’ve officially reached 2024 playoff baseball.
