Former LSU football class of 2022 commitment expected to enter spring transfer portal

The 2024 spring transfer portal window is officially open, and already we’re starting to see some of the biggest names in football looking for a new home ahead of the new college football season. Notably, one of such names appears to be that of Miami running back TreVonte’ Citizen, who was once committed to LSU as a part of the class of 2022.

It wasn’t long ago that it felt like a three-man race for talented four-star running back TreVonte’ Citizen out of Lake Charles, LA. After once being committed to stay in-state to play for LSU and even being crystal ball predicted to Florida just days before national signing day, he eventually ended up with Miami.

Unfortunately, that 2022 decision didn’t exactly pan out as many expected for the 6-foot-1, 220-pound back. In two seasons with the Hurricanes, Citizen didn’t see any game action, and will reportedly look to make an impact elsewhere through the spring transfer portal.

Coming out of high school, the Lake Charles College Prep standout was one of the highest rated players in the country, ranking No. 133 nationally, according to 247Sports, and No. 8 among running backs.

With the most recent report that he’ll enter the transfer portal, he has the potential to make an immediate impact with a Power Four program. He isn’t the most explosive player in the country, but with his combination of size, elusiveness and solid speed, he’s more than capable of making opposing defenses suffer.

Just one year ago, LSU found itself in a bit of an odd position with eight running backs on scholarship. As we look ahead to 2024, just two remain on roster, with the chance to have as many as four before the start of fall camp.

With that, the main two names to keep in mind are rising sixth-year senior Josh Williams and rising sophomore Kaleb Jackson. Both received plenty of experience during the 2023 campaign, and may have already gotten better throughout the short offseason. During the 2024 LSU spring game this past Saturday, both running backs made a significant impact, showing a combination of speed and power that could prove lethal this coming season.

It’s generally a fair assumption that the pair will take the bulk of snaps in 2024, but don’t be surprised to see true freshman Caden Durham make an impact here and there.

While they aren’t exactly in desperate need for an additional running back, it’s important to note that just one or two injuries could end up derailing the position group in a major way.

In turn, it wouldn’t surprise if we happened to see coach Brian Kelly and running backs coach Frank Wilson look into a young Louisiana-based spring transfer portal target such as TreVonte’ Citizen. While he’d be unlikely to take over as the starter, he could certainly provide immediate snaps if able to stay healthy.
