In the era of the transfer portal, we find ourselves at a time when it’s rare to find students stick to one or even two schools. For former LSU football quarterback Max Johnson, he’s decided to move on to number three. After leaving the Tigers for Texas A&M in 2022, he’ll now look to play for a third team in 2024.

Former LSU football quarterback Max Johnson enters transfer portal

Former LSU football quarterback Max Johnson made his way to Baton Rouge as a freshman in 2020. He’d go on to start 14 games for the Tigers in the next two years, and things were looking good for the former three-star.

However, entering 2022 under new head coach Brian Kelly, his starting position began to look grim, leading him towards the transfer portal. He’d end up with coach Jimbo Fisher for two years at Texas A&M, but struggled to find any solid footing as it pertains to playing time.

Now, after four years of college, he still has two years of eligibility remaining and is heading to a third home to make use of them.

It’s hard to say exactly where he might be leaning, but the veteran quarterback has now made two stops in the SEC and grew up in Athens, GA. While it’s hard to imagine him returning home to play for Georgia, he brings plenty of experience and production to the table, so we could see him with another southern team in 2024.

Over his four years, Johnson was largely productive, improving his efficiency each year since joining the collegiate ranks. He’s thrown the ball 784 times for 5,853 yards and 47 touchdowns. Additionally, he’s only thrown 12 total interceptions while completing 60.5 percent of his passes.

Johnson as a Tiger

Johnson had a tough end to his career as a Tiger but gave the fanbase plenty of fond memories to hold on to. Despite going 11-12 in his two seasons with LSU football, he was always solid, throwing the ball 523 times for 3,884 yards and 35 touchdowns in two years.

Notably, one of his best games with the Tigers was his last. The former LSU football quarterback threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-24 win over his future team, Texas A&M.

Max Johnson is entering the portal as a grad transfer with two years of eligibility remaining. Despite being in his fourth collegiate season, he entered 2023 as a technical redshirt sophomore due to COVID-19 in 2020 and a season-ending injury in 2022.
