15-year-old boy faces charges after shocking mass shooting at Glendale’s Westgate
What began as a busy Independence Day evening at Glendale’s Westgate Entertainment District in Arizona quickly turned into panic after gunfire erupted in one of the state’s most popular entertainment destinations.
According to Glendale police, the shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. on July 4, 2026, near the fountain area around 91st and Glendale avenues. Hundreds of people were gathered at restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues when multiple shots were fired, sending families and visitors running for safety. Authorities later confirmed that a 15-year-old boy from Phoenix had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
Argument Escalated Into Gunfire
Suspect Encountered Classmates
Investigators said the teenage suspect was visiting Westgate with members of his family when he encountered several classmates. Police believe the meeting quickly became confrontational.
According to Glendale Police Sgt. Bryan Hoskin, a heated verbal dispute soon escalated into a physical fight involving members of the two groups. During the confrontation, the 15-year-old allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds.
Multiple Victims Were Hit
Five people suffered gunshot injuries during the incident.
Police revealed that four of the victims were believed to be involved in the confrontation, while a fifth victim was merely grazed by a bullet despite having no involvement in the altercation.
Among those injured were the suspect’s own two sisters. One of the sisters is only eight years old, making her the youngest shooting victim. Authorities said all five victims survived, and none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. Most victims received treatment at local hospitals before being released.
Massive Police Response Followed
Entertainment District Locked Down
The shooting prompted an immediate response from Glendale police officers, SWAT teams, and numerous emergency personnel.
Westgate Entertainment District was placed on lockdown as officers searched for the gunman. Businesses were temporarily secured while visitors were instructed to shelter in place or evacuate safely as law enforcement swept the area.
The lockdown remained in effect until officers determined there was no continuing threat to the public.
Suspect Found Hiding
Following an extensive search, officers located the 15-year-old suspect hiding elsewhere within the Westgate plaza.
Police arrested him without further incident.
Authorities recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used during the shooting. Officers also found approximately $850 in cash in the suspect’s possession.
Court Documents Reveal Additional Details
According to court records, investigators believe the confrontation may have been fueled by the suspect intentionally displaying a large amount of cash.
Police said the teenager admitted showing roughly $800 in cash to members of the opposing group in what investigators described as an effort to taunt them.
The situation allegedly intensified afterward, eventually leading to the physical confrontation and gunfire.
Teen Claims He Acted in Self-Defense
During questioning by investigators, the suspect reportedly admitted firing his weapon but disputed the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to police, the teenager claimed he fired only a single shot after believing someone in the opposing group had drawn a firearm first. He told detectives he acted in self-defense.
However, investigators said evidence collected during the investigation indicates multiple shots were fired, and the case remains under active review as authorities continue gathering witness statements and surveillance footage.
Charges Filed Against the Juvenile
Because the suspect is only 15 years old, authorities have not publicly released his identity.
Police confirmed that he is facing multiple felony charges connected to the shooting. Court proceedings are expected to take place within the juvenile justice system unless prosecutors seek different legal action permitted under Arizona law.
Investigators also continue examining how the teenager obtained the handgun used in the shooting.
Investigation Into Other Individuals Continues
Although one suspect has been arrested, Glendale police have indicated that investigators are still examining whether anyone else may have been involved in the events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities continue reviewing surveillance video, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing forensic evidence to determine whether additional arrests or charges may be warranted.
Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded video during the confrontation to contact investigators.
Community Shocked by Violence at Popular Entertainment Destination
Westgate Entertainment District is widely known as one of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s busiest shopping, dining, and entertainment complexes, attracting thousands of visitors during holiday weekends.
The Fourth of July shooting left many families shaken as celebrations abruptly turned into scenes of panic. Videos circulating on social media captured frightened crowds running for cover as officers rushed toward the scene.
Officials emphasized that the suspect was taken into custody quickly and that there was no ongoing danger to the public once the area had been secured.
Investigation Remains Active
Glendale police continue to investigate every aspect of the shooting, including the precise sequence of events, the origin of the firearm, and whether any additional criminal charges may be filed.
Authorities have urged anyone with information, photographs, or cellphone video from the incident to cooperate with investigators as they work to complete the case.
