LSU women’s basketball has had quite the year to remember! Not only has this been one of the most successful years in their history, but it’s produced some of the most impactful Black female athletes of the year. Recognizing this, two LSU women’s basketball stars, Angel Reese and Alexis Morris, have been nominated for the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Sportswoman of the Year Award.

When thinking of some of the most impactful college athletes in the country from this past year, Angel Reese and Alexis Morris need to come to mind. Not only were they on one of the greatest LSU women’s basketball teams of all time, but they stayed true to themselves through it all.

That’s why it should come as little surprise that the two stars were nominated for the BET Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The BET Awards is an annual awards show to “celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.”

Along with the two LSU women’s basketball players, the other nominees are Allyson Felix (track and field), Candace Parker (basketball), Naomi Osaka (tennis), Serena Williams (tennis) and Sha’Carri Richardson (track and field). It’s a star-studded group, to say the very least!

Notably, Morris and Reese aren’t the only LSU standouts on the list. Sha’Carri Richardson, a women’s track and field star, attended LSU for her freshman season before turning pro in 2019.

Angel Reese was one of the greatest athletes in all of college sports this year. Not to mention, she became one of the most influential athletes in the country. She did incredible things for women’s basketball all year and should continue this into next season.

While Alexis Morris didn’t show the level of dominance that Reese had, few journies are more inspiring than hers. Playing on four teams in five years, she showed incredible resilience throughout her career, never giving up on herself. In finishing 2023 with a national championship, it’s hard to imagine a better way to end her college career.

The women’s college basketball stars had stellar years on the court

The phrase “everyone eats” is probably the best way to describe the 2023 LSU women’s basketball team. While Angel Reese was the star of the show for the most part, everyone found ways to make an impact.

Reese led the way with her 23.0 points, 15.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. She was one of the best players in college basketball throughout the 2023 season, and it showed each game.

Alexis Morris, on the other hand, played a very different, but equally important role on the team. Recording 15.4 points, 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game, she was the scrappy ball handler for the Tigers.

Without each of these stellar women leading the team, who knows where LSU women’s basketball would have ended up in 2023? Whether either one wins the BET Sportswoman of the Year Award or not, there’s no denying the impact they left on Baton Rouge this year.
