Man killed woman with machete and concrete block then showed up at his mom’s house ‘very sweaty’ as his parents called 911 after seeing ‘a human foot lying on the ground’

On a quiet Saturday in September 2024, the rural peace of China Spring, Texas, was shattered by a crime so visceral and disturbing that local law enforcement struggled to find the words to adequately describe it. What began as a domestic confrontation quickly escalated into what McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara called “one of the most horrific, horrible, brutal, senseless attacks that we have seen in a long time.” The incident, which ended with the death of 38-year-old Michaela Brooker, exposed a nightmare right in the backyard of an unsuspecting neighborhood.

The horror unfolded in the 15000 block of Old China Spring Road. According to investigators and criminal complaints, the catalyst for the discovery was a mother’s intuition and a truly stomach-turning sight. Sandra Ozment was at her home when she encountered her 38-year-old son, Richard Ozment. He was standing just outside the house, visibly agitated and, as court documents later noted, “very sweaty.”

Sensing that something was deeply wrong, Sandra attempted to walk past her son to survey the property. Richard tried to physically block her path, but his efforts were too late. Peering past him into the yard, Sandra’s eyes landed on a gruesome detail near a recreational vehicle parked on the property: a severed human foot lying out in the open on the ground.

Shocked and terrified, the mother confronted her son, demanding to know what he had done. Richard’s immediate response was a claim of self-defense, telling his mother that the victim had “tried to stab” him. Unswayed by his explanation and fearing for her own safety, Sandra retreated back inside the house, barricading the doors. Inside, she and her husband frantically dialed 911. Even as Richard stood outside begging them not to involve the police, his parents knew they had no choice but to report the gruesome discovery.

When emergency responders from the China Spring Fire Department and deputies from the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene, they witnessed Richard Ozment fleeing the property into the dense, surrounding woods. In the yard, authorities discovered the devastating aftermath of the assault. Michaela Brooker was found suffering from catastrophic, life-threatening head and bodily injuries. Emergency medical personnel quickly coordinated an airlift to fly Brooker to the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in nearby Temple, Texas. Despite the best efforts of trauma surgeons, her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators quickly pieced together the brutal mechanics of the homicide. The weapon choice and sheer aggression used during the attack painted a grim picture. Ozment had allegedly utilized both a heavy concrete block and a machete to bludgeon and hack at Brooker, inflicting injuries so severe that they resulted in the partial dismemberment witnessed by his mother.

With the suspect on the run and considered armed and highly dangerous, a massive manhunt was launched across the heavily wooded terrain of McLennan County. The operation grew rapidly, eventually drawing in between 30 and 50 law enforcement personnel. The search party included teams from the Waco Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Game Wardens, and tracking units from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. For nearly ten hours, authorities utilized helicopters, K-9 tracking dogs, and mounted horse units to comb through the thick brush.

Despite the large scale of the search, Ozment hadn’t actually traveled very far. He was eventually located a mere 100 yards from the initial crime scene, utilizing a desperate and unusual hiding tactic. A mounted deputy, scanning a murky stock tank—a small farm pond used for livestock—noticed a disturbance in the water. Ozment was completely submerged in the water, hiding beneath a low-hanging tree limb that brushed against the surface. The deputy spotted the top of Ozment’s head and neck just above the waterline when the suspect shook his head, causing a slight splash. Deputies moved in immediately, pulling a dripping and defeated Ozment from the pond and placing him under arrest without further violence.

Following his capture, Ozment was booked into the McLennan County Jail and formally charged with first-degree murder. As the community reeled from the details of the crime, public outrage intensified when Ozment’s extensive criminal history came to light. Court records revealed that this was far from his first run-in with the law. In 2013, Ozment had been arrested for a burglary that occurred on the exact same block of Old China Spring Road. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 40 years in state prison. However, due to state parole structures, he was released early after serving just ten years of that four-decade sentence.

Sheriff McNamara did not hold back his frustration regarding the structural failures that allowed Ozment back into society. “He never should’ve gotten out and he did,” the Sheriff stated during a press briefing, pointing out the tragic reality that Brooker’s death was entirely preventable. “Anytime you see somebody paroled out early like this and they commit this kind of crime, it’s senseless. It didn’t have to happen.”

In the wake of the tragedy, the focus turned toward the victim, Michaela Brooker. Described by loved ones as a cherished mother, daughter, and friend, her sudden and violent departure left a profound void in her family. Friends and relatives established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and support her surviving children, expressing their collective heartbreak over an act of violence that defied comprehension.

The legal proceedings against Ozment moved forward into the summer of 2026, bringing the horrific events back into the public eye. As jury selection commenced, Ozment’s defense team signaled that they intended to lean heavily on the claim he made to his mother immediately after the killing. His defense attorney confirmed to local media that their primary legal strategy would center on self-defense, arguing that the physical confrontation was initiated by Brooker.

However, prosecutors are expected to present a starkly different narrative to the jury, focusing on the sheer asymmetry of the violence, the use of multiple heavy weapons, the subsequent attempt to hide the body, and Ozment’s flight from the police as evidence of a intentional, brutal murder.

The trial stands as a grim culmination of a day that changed the China Spring community forever. For the family of Michaela Brooker, the upcoming court battle represents a painful but necessary path toward accountability, while local residents are left to grapple with the reality of an unthinkable cruelty that occurred just past their front doors.
