Cause of Death Revealed for Woman, 75, Who Died After Tim Hortons Fight Over Order ‘Issue’

A tragic incident at a Tim Hortons restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has taken a new turn after authorities officially revealed the cause of death of 75-year-old Anita Grayson. The woman died following a physical altercation with employees at the coffee chain after reportedly disputing a drive-thru order. Investigators have now released autopsy findings that shed light on what happened in the moments leading up to her death.

What Happened at the Tim Hortons?

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, the incident occurred on May 13, 2026, at a Tim Hortons location on Ice Way in Fort Wayne.

Police said Anita Grayson entered the restaurant to complain about an issue with a drive-thru order she had received earlier. Authorities allege that Grayson became involved in a heated argument with a 17-year-old employee. A 20-year-old shift leader reportedly stepped in to de-escalate the situation and repeatedly asked Grayson to leave the premises.

The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Investigators say Grayson shoved the shift leader and struck her in the face. The dispute then turned into a struggle involving both women before other employees intervened and separated them.

Surveillance Video Captured the Incident

Police later released edited surveillance footage showing portions of the confrontation. According to investigators, the video depicts the argument escalating into a physical struggle inside the restaurant.

Authorities stated that after the altercation ended, Grayson sat at a table and made a phone call. Approximately 10 minutes later, she lay down on the restaurant floor. Employees reportedly checked on her and provided water before she became unresponsive.

Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and transported Grayson to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Coroner Reveals Official Cause of Death

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has now concluded its investigation into Grayson’s death.

Officials determined that the cause of death was “acute exacerbation of congestive heart failure in the setting of a physical altercation.” In simple terms, Grayson suffered a sudden worsening of her existing heart condition that was triggered during or after the stressful confrontation.

The coroner also emphasized that the autopsy found no significant contributory injuries that directly caused her death.

Why the Altercation Was Significant

Medical experts involved in the investigation explained that physical exertion and emotional stress can increase adrenaline levels, placing additional strain on a person already suffering from congestive heart failure.

According to the coroner, the altercation likely triggered a sudden flare-up of Grayson’s heart condition, leading to a medical emergency. While her underlying health issues played a major role, investigators determined that the physical confrontation could not be ignored when classifying her death.

Manner of Death Remains Undetermined

Despite determining the medical cause of death, the coroner’s office has listed the manner of death as undetermined.

Officials reportedly considered whether the death should be classified as natural, accidental, or homicide. After reviewing surveillance footage, body-camera recordings, 911 calls, and autopsy findings, investigators concluded that none of those classifications fully fit the circumstances.

The coroner noted that although Grayson died from heart failure, the altercation played a role in triggering the fatal event, making the case more complex than a typical natural death.

Family Continues to Seek Answers

Grayson’s family has disputed portions of the police account and has called for the release of the complete surveillance video from the restaurant.

The family has also retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump to help investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. Family members argue that more transparency is needed regarding the events that occurred inside the restaurant.

A memorial fundraising campaign established after her death described Grayson as a devoted mother, grandmother, and faithful member of her religious community.

Have Any Charges Been Filed?

As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against any Tim Hortons employees involved in the incident.

The investigation remains under review by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office. Prosecutors are expected to evaluate the final findings before determining whether any legal action is warranted.

Conclusion

The death of Anita Grayson has drawn significant public attention because it stemmed from what began as a dispute over a drive-thru order. While the autopsy determined that congestive heart failure was the medical cause of death, investigators say the physical altercation and resulting stress were important contributing factors. With the manner of death still classified as undetermined and no charges filed, the case continues to raise questions for both authorities and Grayson’s family.
